First thing would be to check that the valve is opening properly. The sliding control links via a cable to a valve in the engine compartment, just about 6" away from where the coolant hoses go through the firewall to the heater matrix. Check that this valve is opening, and fully, with operating the control.

How does the heater work on a Volkswagen Golf?

At the simplest level possible, the heater works by passing hot coolant from the engine into a tiny radiator called the heater core. At this point, the blower motor blows air across the it and the newly heated air blows on to the driver and passengers. If the heater has stopped working in your Golf, this process has failed in one way or another.

Why is my VW Golf not heating up?

While not having enough coolant may make your engine run hotter, it can also cause your Golf to not be able to create enough heat. Is there isn’t enough line pressure, due to low coolant, then the heater core will not be able to get any coolant itself.

What does the thermostat do on a Volkswagen Golf?

The job of your Golf’s thermostat is to regulate the temperature of the engine. It does this by allowing water to enter the engine when it is getting hot, and by keeping coolant from entering while the vehicle warms up. Sometimes when a thermostat goes bad, it stays stuck open.

Place one lead of the Ohmmeter on terminal 1 of the resistor. Place the other lead on terminal 2 and check against specifications. If this circuit is open, showing infinity on the Ohmmeter, the blower resistor must be replaced. Move the lead from terminal 2 to terminal 3 and check this reading against specifications.

Does a blower motor resistor control the fan speed?

Blower motor resistors have several resistors with different resistances. This controls the current that runs through the blower motor. Each fan speed selection is connected to one or more of the resistors in the blower resistor assembly.

How do I know if my blower motor switch is bad?

What does a radiator fan control module do?

An A/C fan control module helps to control the blower that supplies air to the cabin of a vehicle, as well as the cooling fans. The module helps to make sure that the cool air that is produced within the A/C system of a car is blown into the cabin.

How does a radiator cooling fan work?

Basically, a radiator fan blows cooler air through the radiator to lower the coolant temperature and cool off the heat from the car engine. Obviously, when the engine is running, it produces heat. That heat must be dispersed so that the engine will not experience any form of overheating or become too hot.

How does a fan speed control switch work?

They control the voltage across the fan is controlled by a capacitor, the voltage across the fan determines the fan speed. Capacitive regulators are energy efficient with linear speed control, quiet operation without humming noises and highly reliable than electronic type regulator.

How do I know if it's my blower motor or resistor?

Typically, if the fan will work on some speeds but not on others, the resistor is suspect. Okay, let's say there's no melting going on, but your fan doesn't work on all speeds. Typically, if the fan will work on some speeds but not on others, the resistor is suspect.

Basics Of Troubleshooting The Blower Control Switch

In a nutshell, the blower switch interrupts and diverts the electrical current from one contact to another.

Where To Buy The Blower Switch And Save

You don't have to buy the whole A/C-Heater Control Panel to replace the blower control switch since the switch is removable. You can find the blower switch just about in anywhere. The best place to buy it, to save a few bucks, is online.

TEST 1: Checking Continuity Of The Blower Switch Fan Speeds

To find out if the blower switch is bad you can do two different tests.

Had this problem since i've owned the car, noticed the plastic cowling was melted and from a few futher investigations realised the blower was not working on setting 1 and was heating the resistor up so much that it was melting the cover and have basically not used this setting since, 2,3 are fine.

Still really confused, checked all wiring all ok, cleaned up contacts on blower motor although was unable to get the motor out. (if anyone knows how to get it out without dropping the lot from inside would be appreciated). Haynes manual useless as only tells you how to remove the whole lot from inside.

Yeah tried wd 40 previously incase anything was starting to seize up, run it for a bit on no3, then silicone lube and run again on no 3 but didn't change and have repeated this time after resistor change with no improvement.

The blowers didn't work on no.3 on my tintop, that was the switch at fault though.

just wondering if you have tried anything else or figured out what the problem was? My fan does either not start at all or will start for a little bit and then turn off again. Changed the switch but to no effect. Not sure what to do next.

what happens is that if I turn on the fan (it doesn't matter which setting) it comes on for 2 mins or so and then stops. sometimes it does not come on at all (again regardless of the setting).

Why is my heater not working?

If the heat is blowing, but blowing cold, it has something to do with the coolant getting to the heater core, or the heater core itself.

What does it mean when a heater hose is hot and cold?

If one of the hoses is hot, and the other one is cold, that is a pretty good indication that the heater core is clogged. If the neither hose has any heat, you may have air in the cooling system, low fluid, or low pressure.

How to tell if radiator is hot or cold?

The overflow reservoir will be connected to the radiator by a tube coming from the top (usually right by the radiator cap). It should have separate lines to indicate “cool hot” and “cool cold”. Some vehicles only have full hot. Never touch the radiator cap unless the vehicle is ICE COLD.

How to tell if your golf is cold?

If your Golf has a built in temperature gauge, take a look at it and see if it is in the spot it is normally in after a bit of driving. If it looks like it is colder than normal, that’s a pretty good indication that there is something wrong with the thermostat.
