My suggestion is to get the fault codes stored in the car's ecu read by a VW approved garage. That will tell them what "was" wrong. Once a fault has occurred the check engine light will probably stay on until the warning has been cancelled using VW software.

i had the same problem with my 20th. it sounds like to me that your coil pack has crapped out on yo. so i would replace the coil pack wires and plugs and that shoud fix your problem
