Why won't my car go into reverse?

If you are a little lazy and don't slide ALL the way to the left, but stop a little before, the car will not go into reverse. I showed this to the tech and he said it was normal.

Why can't I change from first gear to reverse?

Seeing as the knob location for the two gears are right next to each other, it is possible that the reverse lockout mechanism under the shift boot is not allowing you to access reverse, funneling you into first instead.

Why can't I shift into reverse with the clutch on?

The clutch is unable to fully disengage the engine from the transmission to allow you to shift into reverse. If the synchromesh is no longer working fully, this would make it harder to shift in every gear but it's still possible. You are, in essense, double-clutching to shift into reverse.

How does the reverse gear shifter work?

It works because it spins the gears up for you (same job the synchros would normally do). Most cars do not have synchros on reverse, so this is a common "problem" (more of a design choice than an actual problem). – Brian Knoblauch Feb 20 '12 at 14:25

Problem Description

Reverse gear failures and noise in the manual transmission models are common.

Christian Brothers Automotive - Wake Forest

Reverse sounded like a playing card against the spokes of a bike wheel. 3 months later it started popping out of gear if not held in place. Finally, even when holding it in gear, it now slips and grinds, and if I am not backing down a hill... then I go nowhere. Not sure what has failed, why, or what the repair is, or what it will cost.
