Interested to hear how many people play golf the opposite way to their dominant hand.

villa

That's interesting. I've always wondered if there's an actual reason for it.

villa

kind of. being left eye dominant and setting up right handed messed with me a bit. it seemed like i was looking "in front" of the ball and had a hard time staying behind it. it basically had me setting up open unintentionally.

My father sometimes thinks this is the main cause for his lack of distance and his inability to create very much lag or speed during his downswing. But he does hit the ball strait as an arrow. :)

I am right handed (bowl/throw a ball, play tennis, write etc) and originally played golf right-handed as I used a set of my Mum's old clubs when hacking around as a child. However, I batted left handed as a cricketer and always had a stronger backhand at racket sports. So, four years ago, I turned round and decided to play golf as a lefty.

gatorsteve

I'm right handed but play left handed. When my dad played baseball he swung right handed but got more power swinging lefty so he switched and never went back and for some reason he just taught me to swing a baseball bat and club lefty.

Any golfer out there who is born left handed but playing right hand golf? Any particular difficulty that you need to over come and how did you overcome it? Please share your view.

TheDre

I'm a lefty and I golf right handed. I don't think it caused any more problems than anyone else that is new to golf. I think I actually learned faster than most. If you're just starting out, I would definately suggest watching the Shawn Clement instructional videos. They're free on his website. It's definately what helped me improve the most.

I'm a natural lefty and play golf right handed. The story goes that I received a righty three iron when I was 12 or 13. Since I swing a baseball bat lefty, I gripped a golf club the same way (cross handed for righty...).

FlopShotArtist

I'm left-handed and play golf right handed. It started when I started baseball when I was 6. I was a switch hitter, but saw the ball better RH and hit better RH so I switched to RH. When I took up golf, I couldn't golf lefty when I was used to swinging a bat right handed all the time. I do everything lefty except for golf and hitting in baseball.

bepo

i'm ridiculously ambidextrous, it's almost a split between my hands. righty: golf, tennis, writing. lefty: throwing, hockey, lacrosse. When I started golfing I actually practiced both ways, and eventually decided to be a righty because clubs are more available and easier to find, lol.

bleach

I was a switch hitter in baseball, left side for control and placement, right for power. The first time I played golf played with a friends clubs (righty of course), never looked back. I do everything left handed except golf. Not that I'm a good golfer, but I couldn't imagine playing golf left handed.

When my father took up golf, years and years ago, there was just a lack of left handed equipment, and it tought him to play right handed. He is 70 now, but still a 12 handicap. Can hit it from either side, but plays 99% of shots from the right side.
