About the 2021 Golf Ball Test

The 2021 MyGolfSpy ball test was conducted at Scottsdale National Golf Club. Testing took place over five days and included nearly 60 hours of test time. In total, the robot hit just under 4,500 shots. We tested 37 golf ball models (35 of the most popular urethane offerings, refurbished golf balls and Pinnacle range balls).

Key Findings

As we found during our 2019 Golf Ball Test, there is an absolute correlation between compression and ball speed but there are conditions under which softer balls can keep up with firmer balls. For slower players (sub-85 mph), the speed differences are so small that there’s a case to be made for not worrying about it.

What is Wilson's velociticor?

Wilson’s Velociticor (yes, it’s a mouthful) is the engine that makes the two-piece Duo Soft+ hum down the fairway. (Available in white.)

What is Srixon's fastlayer core?

Srixon’s FastLayer core transitions from a soft center to a firm outer edge for an effective energy transfer at impact. The thin cover is equipped with a 338 speed dimple pattern that increases lift for more distance overall from tee to green. (Available in five colors.)

What is the E12 contact?

The e12 Contact features a distinctive dimple design with a raised center area and an outer portion that slows horizontal rotation while in flight. What does low compression mean in golf?

This is an important aspect to understand. It is simply a measurement of the amount of deflection a ball experiences when struck. Balls with a low compression generate more distance, particularly for slow to medium swing speeds. They also tend to have a softer feel. Faster swingers can use a ball with higher compression which will still deliver distance but give them greater control.

Do golf balls have a thicker casing?

They have used a thicker casing layer and a significantly thinner cast Urethane Elastomer cover. This results in more spin when you need it, around the green, and less when you don’t, off the tee. At the same time, they have managed to keep the exceptionally soft feel these balls have been known for in the past.
