The one thing I have to say is with all shoes I buy and that's street shoes Golf shoes cowboy boots whatever. I always replace the footbeds with very good footbeds with good arch support. Just seems to make a great difference

When I was in Mexico a about three years ago, I did not want to try to pack golf shoes, so I packed some New Balance trail-type running shoes with the same thinking you have - the soles looked like they would provide the best grip compared to my other options.

I would say the only thing that would concern me with the “other types of shoes” is what they do to the green. If it is noticed that the shoes you have on are leaving some nasty spots on the greens it's probably not a good shoe for Golf, but other than that find comfort and wear them.
