At my school, it is like college where a student-athlete has four years of varsity eligibility. Perhaps J.B. Holmes was considered a member of the Junior Varsity team and therefore did not count towards any of his legal eligibility years.

My sister played on the varsity boys team last season when she was in middle school, and she will be on the team till she graduates I would imagine. I think in a sport like golf where it is such an individual thing and the risk of injury is minimum due to your physique there shouldn't be a problem.

I guess it depends on where you live, because here, there is a 4 year eligibility on Varsity sports. There was actually a team disqualified from the district championships a few years ago, because one of their players was on his 5th year on the Varsity team. They worked hard to get there, and were booted out because of it.

In Tennessee there is no limit to how many years you can play for your high school team, BUT, you must go to school in the same building as the high schoolers. My school was 9-12 and our biggest rival was 7-12th grade, so they had a larger pool of talent that could participate in high school athletics.
