Wind on the top of your disc will push your disc DOWN and wind on the bottom of your disc will LIFT your disc up. So, if you're going for massive distance, throwing a stable disc on a hyzer angle in a hyzer arc will have the wind hitting the bottom of your flight plate and essentially push your disc further down the field.

What is Mako disc golf?

Should you throw a disc golf disc with the wind at back?

When throwing a disc with the wind at your back, the disc will tend to act more overstable. The wind will also cause a downward push on the disc, causing it to lose height faster than normal. To counter these effects, throwing an over unstable disc is recommended.

What is the star Mako?

The Mako is available in our premium Star plastic for durability and grip. The Star Mako is a very reliable approach disc when you are just out of putting range. Great for shorter right-turn drives where you need continued glide to the right. I absolutely LOVE this disc!

How good are the star Mako discs?

The Star Mako allows me to hit some the most pure, straight lines of any disc I've ever thrown, with glide that approaches a fairway driver. The newer runs (the Champion plastic in particular) are far domier and less stable. Flatter seems to be better!

How do you tell if a disc is over or under stable?

The most effective way to tell if a disc is overstable or understable is to throw it. Try throwing the disc backhand and aiming straight. For right-handed players, an understable disc will turn to the right and an overstable disc will turn to the left. A stable disc will go straight.

Do Understable discs fly farther?

Understable discs go farther than overstable discs of a similar speed, so an understable mid can encroach on some fairway drivers, and have zero fade.

What is an upshot in disc golf?

What is an upshot in disc golf? Simply put, an upshot is an approach shot. Meaning, it is the shot that you take after a tee off that hopefully will put you within putting distance of the basket. Some players may even call it an approach shot and have never heard of the term "upshot" before.

Why is it called a hyzer?

The hyzer angle was named after H.R. “Fling” Hyzer, who was a disc sports guru back when disc golf was in its infancy. What direction does a disc move when thrown on a hyzer?

When throwing a disc on a hyzer, the disc will tend to lift and move more toward the left. If the disc is released with an anhyzer angle, it will get pushed down and toward the right. A disc released flat will get pushed to the left since this is the way the wind is moving.

What happens when you face a headwind?

Headwinds. When facing a headwind you’ll want to grab an overstable disc with more fade. A headwind will cause the disc to act less stable and tends to push the disc up. Using an overstable disc with more fade will help counteract the discs tendency to turn.

Can wind blow in one direction?

Wind can blow in different directions. When considering a shot in the wind you need to realize that wind doesn’t just move in one direction. Off the tee, wind could be moving one way but down the fairway, it could be moving another direction. Keep this in mind when planning your shots on windy days.

Can you throw a disc in a tailwind?

To counter these effects, throwing an over unstable disc is recommended. You’ll also need to release the disc higher. A bonus for throwing in tailwinds is the disc will tend to carry farther . How does wind affect discs?

Remember that as your disc travels through the different stages of its flight, the wind will affect your disc differently depending on the angle of the disc in relation to the ground (hyzer, anhyzer, or flat) and the direction of flight.

Why does a disc move in a tailwind?

It will also make a disc behave as if it were more overstable. This is because the stability of a disc is directly related to the speed of the air passing across it. In other words, the disc thinks it's going slower in a tailwind than it really is.

Why does a disc lift when thrown with a hyzer?

This is because the anhyzer tilt of the disc at release will prevent the crosswind from lifting it. Because a less stable disc will be thrown with a hyzer angle, the crosswind effects (D) will push and lift, making it necessary to start the disc wider and play (guess) how much push it will receive.

What is the drawback of tailwind?

The only drawback to a tailwind is the loss of lift (not to be confused with forward progress). With a little higher release point, exceptionally long throws are possible. A headwind plays exactly the opposite. A headwind will make a disc less stable, and will create less carry by pushing against your disc.

Can disc golf be played in the wind?
