I've tried the alternatives (gatorade ring, etc.) and I'd use them if I had to, but for crying out loud you pay $10 for a plastic clip and use it for the rest of your life. I bought mine in 2002 and still use it to this day. I've never put a crooked line on a ball in all that time.

I just paid $6 plus tax on Amazon for two clips and two markers - a red and a black, if you’re thinking about buying.
