Pull the tranny and replace them. But really, unless you have beat on the tranny you shouldn'y have a bent fork. Mine didn't break until 165K miles and numerous power shifts at the track. Now a bad synchro could be the culprit. At 20K miles that really isn't likely either but it could happen.

Sounds like a bent shift fork. While accelerating you can feel the power cutting in and out quickly. The problem will get worse if you keep pushing 2nd gear till it slips. You can learn where (at what RPM) it wants to jump out and start shifting before it jumps out. The long term fix is opening the transmission and fixing the bent shift fork.

The bike has a bent shift fork. Identify the fork that is supposed to move the slider gear to engage second gear then replace the fork. Note; the fork will look okay to the eye. You can't see the bend even when comparing the old fork to a new one. Check the gear dogs on the slider gear. Are any dogs broken?

Sounds like a badly bent shift fork. Parts will be hard to find. Finding a dealer willing to work on a 30 year old bike will be even harder. The cost to repair would be around $1250. That is more than the bike is worth. I don't advise you to attempt the repair yourself.

This is a classic symptom of a bent shift fork. Why the Manufacturers don't make them stronger is beyond me. Did the bike fall over or the shift lever get hit by the lawnmower? The repair involves splitting the gearbox then replacing the bent fork. This is best done at the dealers shop unless you know what you are doing.
