Seen this before. We had a 2006 MK5 Golf that had the exact same issue. Though sometimes it would fade even when it was not hot outside. Very annoying. Never did find a solution to it though. I don't think there is any solution, short of changing the cluster / LCD.

The LCD sits ontop of a few LED's that emits the light through the LCD. So my common sence would say that the LCD needs replacing, but there would be NO harm in replacing the few LED's below the LCD to see if that solves anything.
