Does the Mk7 GTI have more airflow than the aftermarket?

The modified stock Mk7 GTI intake does not surpass the airflow capacity of the top performing aftermarket intakes, but it gets close. The modified stock intake flows approximately 97.5% of what the top performing aftermarket intake flows.

Does the stock GTI air intake improve airflow?

Note: The grate inside the stock airbox has been removed based on previous results showing a slight improvement in airflow when it is not present. The chart below shows a summary of the airflow readings from the stock GTI air intake along with aftermarket intakes.

How does the Mk7 GTI compare to the is20/is38 turbochargers?

All tests are using an adapter that simulates the IS20/IS38 turbocharger housing inlet. The modified stock Mk7 GTI intake does not surpass the airflow capacity of the top performing aftermarket intakes, but it gets close. The modified stock intake flows approximately 97.5% of what the top performing aftermarket intake flows.

What does the vacuum line on an intake do?

The intake is under vacuum when not in boost - that is what the PVC that is mounted inside the intake manifold controls and pulls crankcase vacuum when the throttle is lifted. In boost, the PVC prevents pressure from entering the crankcase port from the intake manifold.

Where does Petcock vacuum line go?

It should connect to the petcock next to the fuel line. You should see a smaller fitting usually on the front of the petcock with a round housing behind it. This is where the vacuum diaphram is. Engine vacuum turns on the petcock to deliver fuel to the carb only when the engine is running.

How much HP does a downpipe add GTI?

A downpipe by itself might add 20whp for $500 ($25/hp), but pair that downpipe with a proper tune and you can net nearly 100hp over stock, and 40hp over a tuned car without a downpipe.

How much HP does IS38 add?

The IS38 upgrade uses the factory S3 / Golf R turbocharger and delivers 351-357 HP! Both upgrades completely transform the 1.8T, adding between 104-188 HP over stock, depending on setup.

Do you need a tune with a downpipe?

Registered. Less backpressure from a less restrictive downpipe = turbo builds boost faster = more air into the engine from the turbo = you absolutely need a new tune to compensate for that.

How do you clean carbon build up on a 2.0 TFSI engine?

Driving the engine at just over 3000 RPM raises the temperature and puts the engine into a “cleaning mode” where it runs leaner and hotter clearing out a lot of the carbon build up inside the engine, so try to hit this sweet spot as often as you can and for at least 15 minutes per week.

Setup

On one end of the inlet hose is the top half of the airbox, this is primarily to help guide air into the inlet of the hose in a smooth manner.

Results

Testing at 28″ of H2O produced nearly identical results from the Racingline hose and the stock accordion hose. The Racingline hose just edged out the stock hose flowing 403 CFM versus the stock hose 401 CFM.

Conclusion

With enough airflow the aftermarket hose starts to show an airflow benefit over the stock accordion hose.

What does a hose do on an intake?

The hose is just connected to the air box to pull (or dump) filtered air for the intake flaps. If it wasn't connected to the airbox or a filter, it would just be pulling in unfiltered air, which could dirty up or damage the solenoid/diaphragm. Unless it's a different hose that is disconnected that actually sees vacuum from the intake manifold it should not have any effect on drivability or fuel economy.

What happens if you don't connect the intake manifold?

PROFILE

The ARM MK7 GTI/GOLF R Intake Kit was designed to increase airflow on your 2.0T by removing the stock intake restrictions. Upgrading to the ARM MK7 Intake allows your 2.0T to produce more power and torque throughout the RPM range, especially at higher RPM. The ARM MK7 Intake is ideal for tuned IS20, IS38, and upgraded turbo equipped 2.0T's.

CONSTRUCTION

The ARM MK7 GTI / GOLF R Intake features a class-leading 4" inlet size at the air filter to maximize airflow for even the most demanding builds. The ARM intake tube is built as a single piece of 6-layer reinforced silicone for a seamless transition to the 2.75" stock turbo inlet or the ARM MK7 Turbo Inlet .

ARM MOTORSPORTS LIFETIME WARRANTY

Every ARM Motorsports product is backed by a lifetime warranty which is automatically issued at the time of purchase. Your warranty protects you against any defects in craftsmanship or fitment. The warranty entitles you to a replacement unit.

Warning

Work at your own risk. This work is inherently dangerous and must only be carried out by a qualified mechanic.

Step 1

Remove the air intake pipe. There are two pipe clamps located at either end, depending on your model it may be a spring-based clamp or screw clamp.

Step 2

Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Hose from the turbo inlet elbow. This is done by squeezing the sides and lifting upwards. You can now spin the connector away.

Step 3

Loosen this screw to remove the turbo inlet. The screw does not need to be entirely removed.

Step 4

The turbo inlet can now be removed. Turn clockwise approximately 1/4 turn and it will loosen from the turbo.
