Think about it: If you grip the club with your arms straight down instead of slightly out and higher, you're reducing the angle between your arms and the shaft, and so you're putting your hands on the club differently.

Swing changes take time, don't expect to naturally get better overnight. This is the reason a majority of golfers don't improve. They make changes but don't see immediate results so they don't stick with the changes. It's the same as when someone tells an individual to change there grip yet the response is "This feels weird."
