Marking the golf ball on the putting green is a common occurrence. So you better know the correct procedure.

Rules and Etiquette Relating to Marking Your Ball on the Green

You are not required to place the ball marker behind the golf ball before lifting your ball on the putting green. You can place your ball marker in front of the ball or beside it, so long as you replace the ball in the correct position later. However, we recommend always placing the marker behind the ball.

THE STRAIGHT LINE

Draw a line along the equator — the thicker the better. On the greens, point the line on the ball down the line to your target, then square your putter to it. Bam! Perfect aim.

THE PERSONAL TOUCH

A smiley face or your kid’s initials can help calm your nerves. Motivational cues are great too — as long as it’s not WWIBFD (“What Would Ian Baker-Finch Do?”).

THE LONE DOT

Pros focus tighter on the ball than amateurs, studies show. It takes hours of training. Or, you can draw a black dot on the ball and keep your eyes on it until it disappears from sight.
