Golf balls are retrieved from water hazards on courses all over the world, and while the water depth is rarely more than 40 feet -- and usually less than half that -- divers can easily become disoriented or overly weighted down by the reclaimed balls and equipment.Jul 4, 2002

Why do golf courses stock their ponds?

However, most golf course ponds are often stocked with fish to keep aquatic growth down and maintain a natural balance in the water. While some courses may outright prohibit fishing on the course, others stock fish to entice anglers to play a round.

How many golf balls are in a pond?

Weynand, 28, averages about 200 to 300 balls per pond but said many variables can affect the amount of balls in a lake, from the season to the location to whether they came from a left-handed or right-handed shot.Feb 16, 2018

How do golf courses keep their ponds clean?

A dredge for golf course ponds is the basis for dredging. The machine works by pumping the water and sludge out through a submersible pump and into a series of bladder bags or dewatering tubes. These bags have minuscule holes, which let the water escape but keep the muck inside.

How deep does a golf hole have to be?

4 inchesThe Rules of Golf explicitly state that a hole must be 4.25 inches in diameter and at least 4 inches in depth. Maintaining clean hole edges is one of the reasons why holes are changed frequently, often each morning prior to the first tee time.May 1, 2020

Do golf balls become waterlogged?

The golf ball core is hygroscopic, which means that it absorbs water. However, it takes 12 hours for the water to get through the cover and find its way to the core. Therefore, we can confidently conclude that a golf ball that has been immersed underwater for an extended period can be waterlogged.May 22, 2021

Do golf balls get old?

A golf ball in good cosmetic shape will hold its shelf life for 5-7 years or seven 18-hole rounds. However, scuff marks from any unfortunate play are more likely to result in a player changing golf balls much sooner than losing their core integrity.Oct 8, 2021

What is a pond called on a golf course?

On a golf course, a "water hazard" is a pond, lake, river, stream, sea, bay, ocean or any other open water on the course, including ditches and drainage ditches.Dec 29, 2018

Why is a golf hole 4.25 inches?

The size the R&A mandated? Four-and-a-quarter inches in diameter. R&A ADOPTS 4.25-INCH HOLE SIZE That first hole-cutting implement utilized a cutting tool that was, you guessed it, 4.25 inches in diameter. The folks running the R&A apparently liked that size and so adopted it in their rules for 1891.

How deep is the Cup in golf?

Golf Hole (Golf Cups) have a regulated diameter of 4.25” (108 mm) and total depth between 4”-6” (101.6-152.4 mm). Golf Holes, or Golf cups, are the ultimate target for hitting the ball into in a game of golf.Dec 11, 2020

What are the dimensions of a golf hole?

4.25 inchesUnder the rules of golf, the diameter of a golf hole must be 4.25 inches (10.795 cm). This official hole size is agreed upon by golf's two major governing bodies, the USGA and the R&A. Holes must be cut to a minimum of 4 inches deep, though there is no specified maximum limit to their depth.Jun 14, 2021

Why do you need to line a pond with clay?

Dependent on pond bottom leakage and/or seepage, it may be necessary to line a pond with clay or a geotextile to gain any usable storage. Pond storage provides supply redundancy, which allows superintendents to meet peak demands even if the primary source of water is temporarily impaired or off-line.

What are the best management practices for golf course water use?

The best management practices for golf course water use (BMPs) are intended to promote water conservation, preserve or improve water quality and protect water resources. These BMPs were developed by a work group consisting of superintendents, environmental regulators, and specialists from local engineering, scientific, and irrigation consulting groups. They were developed for the use of golf course planners, architects, developers, and local regulators who may need assistance and guidance in developing new golf courses, or making changes to existing golf courses, under the regulatory and environmental constraints that exist in the State of Connecticut.

Why are ponds important for wildlife?

In addition to providing water supply, constructed storage ponds can be designed to provide beneficial habitat for wildlife.

How do BMPs affect golf course construction?

The goal of this section is to present BMPs that minimize the potential of pollutants reaching surface or ground water as a result of golf course construction and maintenance operations and thereby minimize non-point source pollution. Many of the BMPs associated with the previous sections, which deal with water use, are also important in minimizing pollutant transport through soils and surface runoff. Those practices that prevent over-watering are especially important for minimizing pollutant transport through leaching or by surface runoff. The maintenance of high infiltration and water holding capacities of soils is also critical.

I fish the ponds at the local golf course at night once a month or so and have almost been arrested twice! But the fishing is usally great so its worth it.

bass master

We fish them all the time. Pre Spawn this year was awsome at a couple of the bigger golf course ponds we hit this year. Just stay out of the way.

I have a golf cource in my area that has a pond but i fished there and caught a 3lb largemouth bass. The golfers dont like it when you fish there though.

Intake Cleaning

Golf course ponds serve multiple purposes above and beyond being a proverbial black hole whose insatiable appetite requires it to be fed a steady supply of $5 golf balls on a daily basis.

Formation of Sand Bars

From the minute the golf course pond was initially filled with water, Mother Nature has been trying to reclaim the land that is rightfully hers. Through natural processes, the earth attempts to absorb the water and turn it into a swamp, then a mosquito-infested marsh, then a grassy field.

Nuisance Algae, Weeds, and Cattails

You can often smell a dirty pond long before you see it. The yellow/green algae on the surface of the water starts to look like toxic sludge and can give off offensive odors. If left unchecked, the algae bloom will take over the entire pond and choke the life right out of it by blocking the sun and eating up all the nutrients.

Aesthetics

Last, but most certainly not least, are the overall aesthetics that a properly dredged golf course pond offers. Golfers pay big money for the chance to be challenged by 9 or 18 holes. If they encounter unsightly ponds that haven’t been maintained in ages, the chances of them coming back to play another round are slim-to-none.

Golf Course Pond Maintenance

At American Underwater Services, we specialize in the dredging and maintenance of golf course ponds. Our experts have decades of experience that can benefit both you and the golf course you’ve been tasked with maintaining.
