If you do a search, you'll see that this topic has been debated several times. A lot of people use Magic Eraser with good results. A lot use plain soap and water. Be careful with automotive cleaners, especially the ones for tires.

We never used a certain type of shampoo...all seemed to work great. I think the way shampoo lathers up has something to do with it....picks up all the dirt in the lather...then just wipe off with a damp cloth....as posted above a stiff bristle brush is a must to get the dirt out of crevices. It also gets a white sole gleaming clean.

I use a shoe tree... Keeps the form of them better, dries them out and makes them smell like cedar.

Several of you mentioned white shoe cream. I follow the directions and it seems to do nothing- it doesn't cover it just wipes right off.
