Why can't I put my car in reverse?

Why is my car not going in reverse?

When your vehicle's transmission fluid level is low, it causes insufficient lubrication, which leads to overheating of the transmission gears.

New to Golf R but previous 3 cars have been Golf GTI 35 editionehite, Golf R32 white and Golf R32 Black - I now have s Golf R in silver and each and every time I reverse the gear knob pops up but doesn’t jump out of gear but you can see and hear the gear knob pop up.

I have exactly the same issue when selecting reverse as been like this for a while now and no idea why its happening but at least someone else is experiencing it like me as i didn't know whether to post this a while back but didn't know how to put it?

Pebbles1070

Yes manual would touch DSG and yip 2015. It’s nit an issue but I’m worried it is an issue longer term like could this be causing extra wear and tear in something else and I land up with hefty bill for something it’s being doing since I picked it up.

I wonder if the engine/gearbox is moving in the mounts ? I'm thinking that when you are driving forward the torque is twisting the engine/gearbox in one direction, then when you start moving in reverse the force is going in the opposite direction, and as the gear lever is connected to the gearbox by cables this movement at the gearbox is being transmitted to the gear lever..

Pebbles1070

i will try this when I reach my work car park (may look I can’t park but worth trying anything) many thanks 👍🏼 Fingers crossed your theory holds true. I will advise back as any person has the same issues.

Pebbles1070

This theory unfortunately doesn’t fit the bill - since the gear linkage has been tightened on Monday it pops as soon as it’s shifted into reverse I don’t even have to move I tried neutral/reverse several times and not moving even an inch but each and every time I go into reverse it pops

gregozedobe

Oh well, scratch that theory (but it was worth trying as it cost you nothing). Time for some more questions:

vwgolfmk7

Hi all, anyone had an issue with 2016mk7 when insert reverse, and goes to make into a free gear the reverse will lock in?

vwgolfmk7

Hi, it's manual, it will engage normally, but when I come to remove it sometimes will lock, will be hard to remove it from reverse. Hope you will understand my English.

gregozedobe

Is there any chance your clutch is not releasing completely ? If it is dragging even a little that can make gear changing difficult, but I'd expect you to have problems with other gears as well. Does it start to engage when your clutch pedal is still close to the floor ?

vwgolfmk7

Sometimes other gears are not that usual, but the reverse are the worst, and even the first gear sometimes is doing like the reverse. Already changed clutch kit and switch selector. Problem cames after just 5000 km.

Yes clutch point right to the floor. I was thinking if it's a master cylinder issue

Scotty2hotty

Try bleeding the clutch, check the master and slave cylinder for leaks?

First and reverse are the same gear using the same motionshaft a seperate cog is introduced when selecting reverse to make it go backwards. If reverse does not work due to damage then usually first does not work either I would check very carefully the outside selectors for damage .

Problem Description

Reverse gear failures and noise in the manual transmission models are common.

Christian Brothers Automotive - Wake Forest

Reverse sounded like a playing card against the spokes of a bike wheel. 3 months later it started popping out of gear if not held in place. Finally, even when holding it in gear, it now slips and grinds, and if I am not backing down a hill... then I go nowhere. Not sure what has failed, why, or what the repair is, or what it will cost.
