The roundtrip fare as of 03/2009 is $40 r/t. The island is 15 miles off either side of the Chesapeake and there any no car ferries. If you go with Smith Island cruises you will get free parking in a fenced in lot and travel on a fast boat with head and air-conditioning inside.

Is Smith Island open for tourism?
Smith Island hospitality is so warm, but their communities are not built around tourism. There’s a visitor center with a small but worthwhile history exhibit, two restaurants in Ewell, a deli/market in Tylerton, and they all close at 4pm. There's no beach, no bar, no spa, no mini-golf, few shops, no supermarket nor drugstore.

Smith Island is a great place to go to, but you should carefully consider if you are seeking a quiet, not touristy place. Further if you want a place that caters to tourists, this isn't it. Stay away from the dock restaurant and do the smart travelling at a B&B.

How to get to Smith Island?
Smith Island is only accessible by boat, and you must take a ferry from Crisfield, Maryland to the island. Due to the ferry schedule, you pretty much have to spend at least one night on the island. There is only one guaranteed ferry that leaves Crisfield and goes to Smith Island every day at exactly 12:30 pm, and one ferry that leaves Smith Island and goes to Crisfield every day at 7:30 am. I found that one day on the island was enough, so I recommend taking the 12:30 pm ferry to Smith Island, spending the night, and then taking the 7:30 am ferry back to Crisfield the next morning. The Smith Island Inn also offers “ cottages ” to rent, which are houses. When I visited Smith Island, we stayed at an Airbnb called Oysterman’s Pearl. The house is now managed by Smith Inn.
How to get to the Crisfield dock?
To get to the Crisfield dock, follow Route 413 to Crisfield Maryland. Take route 413 to the end which will bring you directly to the Crisfield City Dock. Park in the JP Tawes Lumber parking lot, which is the tan building with an orange roof.
