how does cutting a golf shaft effect swing weight

Making the shaft shorter makes the club shorter, the shaft stiffer, and it will adjust the swing weight. Your club will have less flex when you remove weight. A regular flex can become stiff, and a stiff can become extra stiff when you shorter it, but that all depends on how much you shorten it.

To decrease length, trim the shaft from the butt, or grip, end (do not trim from the tip of the shaft, as it will stiffen the shaft's flex). For every half inch of length added, the swingweight increases by three swingweight points.

How does cutting down shaft affect swing weight?

Swing weight impacts people differently. Do not get confused between altering the balance (swing weight) and actual weight though. A shorter club with lighter swing weight is not necessarily going to increase speed. In fact taking that length away, will in most cases slow the swing down.

What happens when you cut down a golf shaft?

The more shaft you cut off, the lighter, more stiff, and effectively flatter the club becomes. For every 1/2 inch you remove, you will lose approximately three swingweight points. You can readjust the swingweight by adding lead tape to the head of the club. Any amount of cutting will slightly stiffen the club.

What happens when you shorten a driver shaft?

Shortening the shaft will make the club shorter but it will also make the shaft stiffer and adjust the swing weight as well. Plus, the more length you remove, the less flex your club will have. Depending on how much you cut it down, it could move a regular flex to a stiff or a stiff to an extra stiff.

Does a heavier shaft change swing weight?

The general rules are that a two-gram change in clubhead weight will change the swingweight one point (heavier = higher swingweight); a five-gram change in grip weight will change the swingweight one point (heavier = lower swingweight), and a nine-gram change in shaft weight will change the swingweight one point ( ...

And when a driver head feels too heavy, it can be mitigated with a heavier grip or a counterweight installed under the grip. Lastly, you may be wondering about driver length. The informed golfer knows that every 0.5 inches of shaft length removed also removes about 3-5 swing weight points.

When the total weight of a club is reduced, it allows some golfers to swing faster.

Why is swing weight important in golf?

Since distance is the main factor with the driver, swing weight is essential. Many strong players will go to a driver with a slightly lower swing weight. They do this to make sure that they can get the full speed they need from the tee. Sometimes this extra swing speed results in an extra ten yards of distance.

What happens when you change the length of a golf shaft?

Why is the weight of a golf club head important?

This is because, at impact, the transfer of energy is related almost entirely to the weight of the clubhead.

Why use lighter shafts?

Using a lighter shaft allows more weight to be placed in the clubhead through adjustable weights, hotmelt, etc. without increasing the total weight of the club. This “redistribution” of shaft weight into the clubhead can be one of the last tweaks in a fitting that unlocks more distance off the tee.

How many inches of shaft is closest to clubhead?

Do two golfers need the same shaft?

How and why does soft stepping affect swing weight, keeping in mind the shafts would be cut to original playing length if soft stepped. And also, why? I have hear and read conflicting ideas on this site, so can someone please help? Thank you. Much appreciated.

Feedback

soft stepping (and soft cutting) adds additional length to the tip section, increasing the flexability of the shaft so a change in wall thickness of the tip section could affect the weight distribution of the golf club. Hope this helps a bit M60

Feedback

If you are worried about soft stepping or hard stepping affecting swing weight, you might have more problems than that. It might be measurable (on a digital scale), but we are talking about a very small amount. I would think it would be far less than a single SW point (D1 before soft stepping - D0.95).

Feedback

I've never noticed that soft-stepping by itself affected swing weight by any measurable amount provided the lengths are the same. If I put a 7 iron shaft in an 8 iron I'd cut it to length and put it on a swing weight scale. A tip pin would be used if I needed to hit a certain number, but that would be the procedure no matter what shaft was used.

Feedback

If you're talking about constant weight shafts, then consider that your, lets say, 120gm 7i shaft weighs 113 or so when cut to finished length of 36" . Now, your 8i shaft also weighs 113, but at 35.5" because the shafts are designed to play at constant weight.

Feedback

I have soft stepped many times, it's same as normal ( and I built them myself)........you swingweight em when you assemble so not an issue.......you trim the butt, ......you still need a scale to build the clubs.....ferrule size and AMT of epoxy will effect the swingweight more than what your talking about........ The shaft is the same if the length is same....SS, HS, or straight in doesn't matter If your building clubs you need to have a scale, guessing doesn't work since 1 SW point is 2 grams.....how many wraps on grips, 1/8 of inch in shaft length, ferrules, epoxy, everything effects everything .........the shaft all by itself is least of your worries.......

Feedback

I asked my golf pro shop technician to soft stepping my irons, from #4 to #6, #5 to #7 , and so on. So the technician pulled straight the shaft from iron 4 and insert it to iron 6.
