I've had three winters in my GTI. The first one was mild and the stock all-seasons handled it ok. The second was mild and my new (Big O Tires brand) snow tires were never challenged. The third (in the same winter tires) I had no problem getting where I needed, despite the snowy hills. Tires make more difference than the car most of the time.
