The 4MOTION all-wheel drive system of the Golf R, further perfected by enhancements such as the Haldex 5 coupling, is activated even before any wheel starts to slip. This eliminates nearly all traction losses. The system achieves this by using an advanced control function based on specific driving conditions.

The system decides how to apportion power between the wheels based on speed, power application, yaw, and other factors. In a corner, the system can direct more power to the wheel on the outside of the curve to reduce the turning radius.Mar 16, 2021

Apologies if this is a daft question, and i probably should know the answer having ordered our R, but just wondering if the AWD haldex system permanently drives the rears?

NinkyNonk

The blurb is worded to make it sound like it's permanent 4wd, however it's front wheel drive and the rears drive only kicks in when it's required.

golf7.5r

It's the same system as your Skoda, albeit I think the R has an XDS front diff.

gregozedobe

I had a vague idea the latest Haldex system (Haldex V) was a bit smarter than the older ones and could send power to the rear diff before the fronts started to slip. Used predictive programming or some such, based on inputs from the myraid sensors our cars now have.

Thanks for all the responses, so I wasn’t being too daft by wondering why they say permanent AWD.
