How far do range balls travel?

Range balls, as a general rule, will travel up to 10 yards less in distance when struck with wedges or short irons. The longer the club, the less noticeable the drop in distance will be, with data showing drivers suffer almost no loss in distance when hitting either range balls or premium balls.

Are range balls shorter than normal golf balls?

Studies have not definitively proven range balls fly shorter than normal golf balls. Some testing has shown little difference between the two in terms of carry distance, while other data suggests range balls will fly around one-club shorter when using wedges and short irons (but are virtually the same with driver).

Do range golf balls fly straighter?

Range balls don’t fly straighter than normal golf balls as they typically have structural deformities – such as wear, cracks, splits or chips – that negatively impact their performance through the air. New golf balls will fly the straightest, as their surfaces are unblemished.

How much distance do you lose with floating range balls?

Expect that range balls will fly 10-15% shorter than normal and if you're using a limited flight range ball, then expect 25-30% shorter distances to result.

Do golf balls fly further in Florida?

While humid air does feel heavier, it is actually less dense than dry air, as the molecular weight of the water in humid air is less than that of the nitrogen and oxygen dominating air that is dry. As a result, the ball will actually fly farther when air is humid, but only a small amount.

How are floating golf balls made?

Heretofore the customary mode of manufacturing a golf ball light enough to float in water, was to wind rubber thread around a nearly pure gum rubber core, and then to envelop this fabrication with a thin cover of balata rubber or other polymeric cover material.

First post and I am not sure if this is the right topic area or not, I apolgize if not!

In my experience with floaters (which is limited), they seem to be limited flight balls, about 15% shorter than regular range balls. If you're hitting it well and consistently, you can always test the hypothesis by pulling an old ball or two out of your bag and hitting it at the water range.

Feedback

Water ranges with floating balls are more for fun and for warming up. You cannot gauge true distance. Better to hit a regular range if you want to start recording distances.
