I agree with Iacas on this. If you didn't bother your friend by standing where you were and you didn't help in some way his alignment, then you were not breaking any golf rule that I'm aware of.

It would be my opinion that casting a shadow to eliminate distractions would be much like using an unbrella over the player or the line of the putt. I have written the USGA for an opinion.
