What is the Alltrack S?
The base 2019 Alltrack S already represents a significant price jump versus the similar Golf SportWagen 4Motion S, which also has all-wheel drive. Rather than pay even more on top of that for the Alltrack's better-equipped SE or SEL trim levels, we'd keep things simple and go with the S, which does have a fair amount of standard equipment including a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, all-wheel drive, and leatherette upholstery. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but you can opt for a six-speed dual-clutch automatic for an extra $1100.

The flat-bottom steering wheel makes the whole thing feel sportier.
What does the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack do?
WHAT WE LIKE: The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack ’s ability to carry people and stuff comfortably through a wide variety of conditions while providing a genuinely satisfying driving experience. More attractive to our eye than most crossovers but just as capable as many of them, this all-wheel-drive wagon proved to be a fine winter warrior on its Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 tires and has ably hauled firewood, large coolers, and even 600 pounds of sand in its cargo area. It’s “one of the greatest arguments against compact SUVs,” asserted one logbook commenter. As we now enter summer road-trip season, the Golf continues to earn praise for its smooth and strong 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-four, its solid feel, and the distinctive Great Falls Green Metallic exterior color that one driver described as “ ’80s-tastic.”

You can fit (pretty much) everything
I don’t have a list of things I could not fit inside the Alltrack, but rather a list of stuff that did fit: bicycles, lamps, kitchen chairs, a desk, the list goes on. Once the car’s rear seats are lowered, there’s a ton of room. That might not sound surprising given that this is, after all, a station wagon.
It has lots of fiddly things I hate
As a big person, the Alltrack fits me pretty well in most cases: legroom and headroom, seats aren’t too tight, seating position and visibility all work out. But trying to make use of Apple CarPlay is a nightmare.
Fun is where you go, not how you get there
The Alltrack drives extremely well, but I think any "fun to drive" comes from the cool adventures you take with it, not your time behind the wheel. As well as this car drives – and, again, it's more satisfying than most all rival crossovers – it never feels particularly sporty.
The infotainment is good, but not perfect

Does Alltrack have travel?
There was one area where the AllTrack did well: It is much more at home running over dirt washes or flatter unpaved surfaces. Though the suspension doesn’t have much travel, it’s still fairly comfortable in these scenarios. There’s also plenty of power and torque to have a little fun in the wash.
Does the Alltrack have ground clearance?
Like the other members of this class, the AllTrack won’t be able to get to the same places a decently equipped SUV will; it just doesn’t have the ground clearance, suspension travel or grip to keep up. Changing tires would help, but I’m afraid that would hurt its on-road manners, which are excellent.

The Alltrack's 7 inches of ground clearance (compared to the SportWagen's 5.5 inches) and mild all-wheel-drive system are still no match for trails better suited to a Jeep or Toyota SUV, for example. But they are still enough to get most adventure-minded drivers deeper out into the woods, rocks and sand.

Does the Alltrack handle corners?

Interior Dimensions
- Estate carsare all about interior space and practicality, and that’s exactly what you get with the Golf. Like many rivals, putting three passengers in the back seat is a bit of a squeeze, but stick to two rear passengers, and all occupants will find ample room.
Boot Space
- With its relatively small exterior dimensions, the Golf is never going to rival the most cavernous boots on sale. Despite that, there’s more than enough space for most buyers. You’ll also find some clever features to make the most of the available space such as the adjustable boot floor with bag hooks and underfloor storage, as well as the spring-loaded rear seats that fold down wi…
Turning Circle and Fuel Tank Capacity
- A 50-litre fuel tank is about average for a car in this class. It also means the most efficient versions could return a range of over 1,000 miles to a full tank of fuel – provided you can drive like a Saint, of course. Both the Golf Estate and the Alltrack have a turning circle of just 10 meters, which means they’re as good as some superminis at manoeuvring in tight spaces.
Weight
- Considering the space offered by the Golf Estate, it starts off at a pretty lightweight 1,285kg for the 1.2 TSI S five-door – contributing to impressive fuel economy throughout the Estate lineup. The marginally larger dimensions and the four-wheel-drive system on the Alltrack add some weight, which is why the Alltrack 2.0 TDI fitted with the DSG automaticis considerably heavier at …

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- The Alltrack makes efficiency compromises in the name of visual appeal, as its raised ride height and thus worse aerodynamics hurt its fuel economy. In our real-world highway fuel-economy test, the Alltrack matched its EPA rating.
