Beijing to Pyongyang via train

The classic route and the gold standard in our own tours to the DPRK, the Beijing-Pyongyang route starts from Beijing Central Railway Station at 5:27pm daily, arriving in Pyongyang at around 6:45pm the following evening.

Beijing to Tumen via train

Not heard of Tumen? Not really a surprise: this obscure border town is basically only a thing because it offers a point of entry into the DPRK. More than that: it offers the only walking border crossing for foreigners into the DPRK, which makes it absolutely worth it.

Shenyang to Pyongyang by plane

Not a flight often taken by Westerners, it nevertheless exists and is technically possible to take. There are currently three Air Koryo flights a week departing from the Liaoning provincial capital, though it’s generally speaking much more convenient to fly from Beijing.

Vladivostok to Pyongyang via plane

The Russian port city of Vladivostok is but a stone’s throw away from the DPRK across the Sea of Japan, but it is (currently) not possible to take the sea route. What is possible, however, is to fly direct to Pyongyang.

Vladivostok to Pyongyang via train

A sort of mini-version of the Moscow-Pyongyang route. The North Korean carriage that originated in Moscow is attached to a domestic Russian engine for the journey to Ussuriysk, before being coupled with a Korean engine to make the world’s shortest, most adorable choo-choo.

Moscow to Pyongyang via train

The grand Mack daddy of train rides and the only way to go for the truly hardcore ferroequinologist. This route starts in Moscow (duh), winds its way across the Siberian wilderness, and changes in the Far East city of Ussuriysk before continuing onto the Rason SEZ in North Korea.

Seoul to Pyongyang via car

Gotcha! Though there is theoretically an ‘open’ road between the two Korean capitals, in practice it’s not possible to take it. Maybe one day…

This is embarrassing to say but here goes. I thought my knowledge of U.S. geography was pretty good but boy did I miss on this one . I was in New Orleans last month (first time ever) for business and saw the Navigator in port. I was curious how far up the river it had to come to get to the port.

kruzerci

We entered the Mississippi at around 11PM when returning to New Orleans and reached the Gulf just after midnight when we were headed down towards Cozumel.

We didn't... I was typed the order backwards, when we got back to New Orleans and when we left New Orleans.

It's a different kind of departure as you see shoreline for a long time. We took the trip on the Conquest last year and it was really pretty neat. People along the shore would set off fireworks as the ship sailed by so we just sat out on our balcony enjoying the show. :)

Speaking of the Mississippi, has anyone ever done a riverboat cruise? I'm curious what the experience/ships are like.

How many hours does it take to sail down the Mississippi to reach the Gulf of Mexico from New Orleans?

jetskier

When we were going down the river on the NCL Dream, we passed another cruise ship going the other direction. It was shocking as to how close we were.

Capsu78

Since it serpentines, I was quite impressed with the skyline of NO fading away, only to pop up in another part of the horizon. I watched it until nightfall and never got bored with the view.

Bandman

We took the Conquest out of N.O. in '04 and the Sensation out of N.O. the July just before Katrina. The trip down the river is wonderful. Just a really unique experience.

luvgoldens

I agree with others, the trip down the mississippi is a unique experience. I hope to cruise out of NO again in the future so we can experience it again.:)

My son and I were in our room getting ready for bed when he said, "look how close that boat is!" I looked out the window and it was the Conquest heading back in. It is very neat to go down the Mississippi. We sat out on deck for a while looking for alligators (my son was 5 at the time and obsessed with Steve Irwin).

arby70

I'm going in October on the Fantasy and I can hardly wait!! I have heard it was pretty neat going down the Mississippi to the Gulf. I guess I didn't realize how close the ships passed tho.
