Four vs. Four. Six vs. Six. Low ball wins, and pick up after bogey. That will keep things moving and help ensure a payout. Otherwise, in a big group, all you’re going to get is carry-overs. And ties are boring. You want someone to claim the skins. For added excitement, set aside a special pot in case someone makes an ace (more on that later).
Ready golf, please
Let’s be clear: unless you’re competing in a tournament, this is how you should always try to play. But on a par-3 course it’s especially important. Nowhere on the planet will you look more silly pacing off your putts to see who is away.
Embrace the quirks and customs

Par-3 courses are artful, approachable and wildly entertaining. They also allow for looser codes of conduct. Here are the unwritten rules you need to know.
Part 1: Routing
Routing is a completely different challenge for a short course than it is for a full-sized course. Short courses are usually built in an already limited area — often after the main course has been built — which can make creativity more difficult.
Part 2: Process
How it all comes together can change a lot from one architect to the next. Staples told me, “The new movement, everyone gets into their excavators and chops things up and chunks it up and that has to be done in the field. But if you’re not in tune with that, you’re going to have really crummy, crappy golf.
Part 3: Shot variety
Par-3 courses can begin to feel repetitive if not done correctly. Similar greens and approaches from a similar distance can get old pretty quick.
