How far will my golf ball go in Colorado? If you normally drive the ball 250 yards at sea level — say Los Angeles — you will likely drive it 265 yards in Denver. In Summit County where the elevation is around 9,500 feet the equation would be: 9,600 x. 00116 = 11.136. That means your ball would fly 11 percent further than it would at sea level.

Most PGA Tour players say that the ball flies about 10 percent farther in Denver than at sea level, so up here in the mountains, I say about 15 percent longer than at sea level. So, your 150-yard club at sea level may go 165 up here, or from Denver, your 150 club may go 157.Aug 1, 2014

The golf ball flies further in high altitudes mainly due to the change in air density, which decreases as elevation increases. Thinner air exerts less drag force on the ball. The ball moves more easily through the air and doesn't slow down as quickly as it flies, resulting in greater distance.

Why does the ball go further in Colorado?

The precise reasons for this increase are surprisingly complicated. Atmospheric pressure and density at Coors Field are, on average, about 20% less than a park at sea level. This reduces the resulting "form drag," often called air resistance, on a hit baseball, allowing it to travel farther.

How do you adjust yardage for elevation?

The first thing is to use the 15-feet formula. This formula should be approached as follows: If there is an uphill or a downhill shot of 15 feet of elevation, add or subtract one club. If there is more than 15 feet, add or subtract one club for every 15 feet.

How much altitude affects golf shots?

Altitude, or elevation, and wind have the greatest and most apparent effect on golf ball distance. Every 1,000 feet above sea level a golf course sits, a golfer can expect their ball to travel approximately 2 percent farther.

What is the Denver effect?

This is all very interesting I am moving out to Denver in Aug. and can't wait to play. It will be fun to figure out how far I hit each club again for the third time. The past two year I have lived and played in FL, NY, and soon to be CO distances are different in all three areas of the country.

Feedback

I used to live in Colorado Springs and its a 1-1.5 club difference. For some reason you can hit some rediculously long short irons every now and then. It's annoying sometimes. You need to spin your driver a bit more at elevation to really take advantage IMHO.

I'll be moving to a suburb west of Denver in 2 weeks and I've never played out there. All of my golf buddies keep telling me about how much further I'll be hitting the ball when I get there.

Buzzkill

I'm in Colorado Springs (which is higher than Denver) and I'm only seeing a 10 yard gain from California - was hoping for more but that's it.

Jamboy72

You have to remember, it's not just elevation that makes a different...temp, humidity also play a role... If everything else is equal, every 5000 ft. in elevation is approx. 10% carry

Yosef

I play out there once a year with family. Coming from sea level in NC I get a good club longer, definitely takes a bit to get used to. I'd say a good 10-15 yards with your irons, and you may be hitting 300 a lot more often too with the driver.

Thanks for the replies guy! What about half or 3/4 wedge shots? I'm a big fan of the Dave Pelz clock system. My half 60* goes about 55, 3/4 goes 72 or so. Maybe a 5 yard increase? I can't wait to get out there and tee it up. 2 polar vortexes have me itching to get out of Chicago - 45* would feel like 65 right now!
