Is the Golf R crash safe?
The Golf R's crashworthiness has only been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has yet to test this limited-edition model. Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is
The Golf R costs roughly the same to buy as an Audi S3 or BMW M135i, and this might lead you to raise an eyebrow. After all, each of those rivals wear a premium badge, and it’s usually the case that an equivalent Volkswagen costs less.
What Car? has a buying service

Installing the parts to the Golf R
The installation was completed over two days, but Revo suggest it can be done in a day-and-a-half. The time consuming parts are swapping out the turbo and the intercooler.
Direct Replacement Upgrades
As with the turbo, the Revo intercooler and Pipe Upgrade Kit has been designed to directly replace the restrictive and lower budget OEM items. Again, most of this will be hidden, but it does its job feeding the 2.0 TSI engine with cooler air. Essential with a big power forced induction unit like this.
Revo IS38ETR Turbo vs standard IS38 Turbo
The Revo IS38ETR offers significant performance gains over a stock IS38. It comes with a new OEM compressor and turbine housings, so it’s a straight swap with no modifications needed. Every weak point of the stock IS38 has been enhanced. The compressor and turbine housings have been CNC re-profiled to match the larger wheels and stronger shaft.
The IS38ETR V2 is now here
The IS38 ETR Turbo has now been enhanced further with our latest V2 revision. See more information here.
Revo ECU Performance Software
Revo’s goal with their ECU Software was to enable the IS38ETR to be fitted without any loss of reliability or drivability. It had to work on a stock engine without the need for forged internals. To achieve this, they spent two years testing the set-up ensuring the kit carried out thousands of miles worldwide.
Maintaining the Character of the Golf R
The Revo IS38ETR package not only transforms the Golf R into an extremely fast car, but it does so without compromising drivability. It’s one thing to create a quick car, but quite another to do so while maintaining its original character.

What's New For 2022?
- After being on hiatus since the 2019 model year, the Golf R returns for 2022. Its resurrection follows the release of the eighth-generation Golf GTI. With VW planning to stop selling the regular Golf hatchback and station wagons here, that leaves the GTI and the R as the only versions America will get. Thankfully, both are favorites of ours.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
- Since the Golf R is only offered as one fully loaded model, the only decision to make when buying one is whether you want to trade the standard six-speed manual for the optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Choosing the latter increases its base price by just $800. However, we'd stick with the stick-shift. We'll leave the decision to get the ...
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
- Under the Golf R's hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder that makes 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque—up from 288 hp and 280 lb-ft in the last generation R. The engine pairs with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- The EPA has estimated the most efficient version of the Golf R is the one with the automatic transmission, which earned ratings of 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Going with the manual transmission drops those numbers to 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, a worthy tradeoff in our opinion for the more engaging six-speed stick. We haven't had a chance to run it on our 75-mph …
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
- The Golf R mimics the GTI's new cabin design, which provides a sportier aesthetic than the last-generation Golf. Both have a thick-rimmed steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls that operate a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster with configurable layouts. Unlike the GTI, the Golf R isn't available with plaid seat inserts, but it does boast bolstered front seats wrapped in nappa leathe…
Infotainment and Connectivity
- As seen on the new GTI, the Golf R's infotainment system will run through a 10.0-inch touchscreen situated in the center of the dashboard. Its secondary controls include touch-sensitive sliders versus physical knobs and buttons. Along with the obligatory charging ports, the system should be available with a Harman/Kardon premium stereo. We also expect popular content such as Ap…

What's New For 2019?
- The 2019 Golf R is basically the same as last year. Volkswagen even adds a new special color program—called Spektrum—that unlocks 40 different exterior color options to paint your R. Most of these sweet paint choices were once worn by iconic VW models from history, in addition to the five standard colors. Buyers can further dress up the Golf R with the new Black Wheel package t…
Pricing and Which One to Buy
- We can't hide our affection for the Golf R's more affordable sibling, the near-perfect GTI. But for buyers who want the ultimate Golf, the R-rated version—with standard all-wheel drive and a bunch more horses under the hood—is it. Purists will be pleased with the standard six-speed manual transmission, but the optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is both quicker and a better alt…
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
- Likes: Brilliant blend of power and agility, two excellent transmissions, communicative brake pedal. Dislikes: Traces of turbo lag at low speeds, exhaust note is partially synthesized through the car's audio system. The all-wheel-drive Golf R is motivated by a potent turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four—making 288 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque—mated to either a six-speed manua…
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- Despite the additional weight and driveline drag of all-wheel drive, the Golf R bests its hot-hatch classmates with superior fuel-economy figures. Except for the much less powerful Golf GTI, the manual Golf R we tested was the only car in this high-performance group to crack 30 mpg on the highway.
Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo
- Likes: Digital gauge cluster enhances modern aesthetic, loaded with infotainment features, impressive max cargo volume. Dislikes: Back seat that at times can feel snug, slow touchscreen response times, cabin holds fewer loose items than top rivals. As we've come to expect from the entire Golf family, the top-spec R model has a handsome but functional interior with excellent fit …
