How do you measure the mass of a golf ball?

The mass of the golf ball is determined by the rules of the game. Under these rules, the mass of the golf ball should not exceed 45.93 grams or, in other words, 1.620 oz. This rule has to be followed when golf balls are manufactured.

What is the standard size of a golf ball?

Feb 13, 2020 · If you check the rules, you’ll find that a golf ball must weigh no more than 45.93 grams. I wanted to dive a little deeper to get an idea of what the average golf ball weighs and try to understand what factors affect this. I weighed 100 golf balls and in this article, I’ll be documenting my findings. Show.

What is the weight of an average golf ball?

The United States Golf Association (USGA) set restrictions on the weight and size of the golf ball. The weight of the ball should not exceed 1.620 ounces (0.04593 kg) and must have a diameter of at least 1.680 inches.

What is the mass of a typical golf ball?

According to the USGA Rules of Golf, the weight of the golf ball shall not be greater than 1.620 ounces avoirdupois (45.93 gm). The heavier the ball (to a point) the less it can be slowed downs by air resistance and therefore the further it would tend to fly.

Findings Overview

Visit the findings section to see how I arrived at the following conclusions:

The Sample

I started with well over 100 golf balls. I filtered out balls that were too damaged to see the manufacturer or model. I also removed any single Balls (I only selected brands that had at least five balls). I ended up with 100 golf balls which I felt would be a good sample size.

How Much Does a Golf Ball Weigh? Findings

As you can see from the graph below, the trend that shows the average golf ball gets heavier as the condition improves. What’s interesting is that the average weight difference between a new ball and one in poor condition is just 0.21 grams.

Findings

The better the condition of the ball, the heavier it will be on average. Poor balls weighed 45.72, average balls weighed 45.73, good balls weighed 45.8 and new balls weighed 45.93 on average.

Conclusion

As tedious as the weighing process was, on the whole I loved carrying out this experiment and dissecting the data. I’m happy with the outcome and believe a good variety of balls were tested in terms of both condition and manufacturer. In terms of their quality, balls ranged from beginner golf balls to top of the range models.

How big is a golf ball?

The Rules of Golf, jointly governed by the R&A and the USGA, state in Appendix III that the diameter of a "conforming" golf ball cannot be any smaller than 1.680 inches (42.67 mm), and the weight of the ball may not exceed 1.620 ounces (45.93 g). The ball must also have the basic properties of a spherically symmetrical ball, generally meaning that the ball itself must be spherical and must have a symmetrical arrangement of dimples on its surface. Additional rules direct players and manufacturers to other technical documents published by the R&A and USGA with additional restrictions, such as radius and depth of dimples, maximum launch speed from test apparatus (generally defining the coefficient of restitution) and maximum total distance when launched from the test equipment.

Who broke the world record for the fastest golf ball?

Canadian long drive champion Jason Zuback broke the world ball speed record on an episode of Sport Science with a golf ball speed of 328 km/h (204 mph). The previous record of 302 km/h (188 mph) was held by José Ramón Areitio, a Jai Alai player.

How does impact affect golf ball?

When a golf ball is hit, the impact, which lasts less than a millisecond, determines the ball's velocity, launch angle and spin rate, all of which influence its trajectory and its behavior when it hits the ground.

How much does a golf ball weigh?

Currently, a golf ball is required to have a mass no more than 1.620 ounces, or 45.93 grams.

How big is a golf ball?

But now balls are required to have a consistent size. According to the rules, the diameter of a golf ball must not be less than 1.680 inches, or 42.67 mm.

How many dimples are on a golf ball?

For one manufacturer, the answer to how many dimples on a golf ball was a whopping 1,070, which happens to be the record for the most dimples on a golf ball.

Why do golf balls have dimples?

As much as half of the lift a golf ball receives is caused by a backwards spinning motion. When a ball spins backwards, the air pressure underneath it is greater than above it, so the ball rises in the air. Dimples magnify this effect, contributing as much as 50% to the total lift.

Dimensional Analysis

Phil Mickelson decided to practice his swing on his break from golf. He started driving golf balls and found a new technique on his drive that would hit golf balls extremely far. As he started to master his swing, he realized he was hitting golf balls off the surface of the Earth! He practiced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Feedback

I know they had a live q and a session with the guy who helped put together the Golf Digest Hot list balls review. someone asked him when does a ball matter to a golfer and he said if you still lose 3 or more balls per round then his suggestion was to put the money spent on a premium ball into lessons instead.
