Why does my VW Golf use so much oil?

You likely have bad valve seals or bad piston rings. That means oil is getting past these seals and being burned inside the engine. The act of burning oil itself isn't typically a problem in your car, but you may notice a bluish-grey smoke coming from the exhaust if your engine is burning enough oil.

Why do VW use so much oil?

An old oil filter or bad driveshaft may also be contributing to the problem. German made cars like VWs do have somewhat of a bad reputation for burning a lot of oil. VWs with 2-liter turbocharged engines seem to consume a lot of oil but there may be other contributing factors to this as well.

I just hit 5 k miles over 8 months and the check oil sign popped up, checked my oil and it was nearly empty !!! Filled it up but this is something to be worried about right ? Should i take it to the dealers

SevenR

are you positive the sump was the correct full level at the start of th 5000 miles?

Speeddemon

It's normal mate. A lot need Oil at 5/6k. Mine has just needed another top up at 14k.

Nosredna7r

I just put in around half a litre to bring it to the top of the dipstick after 9000 miles. Pretty good I'd say.

marriedblonde

9K in mine and its not needed oil. But as others have said, some do and some dont. But nothing to worry about, a litre in 9K miles is fine.

ashleyman

I see a lot about 'topping up'. Would it not be better to drain and then fill with new fresh oil?

Booth11

Check mine monthly. Not needed any oil - 6k miles and oil at dipstick halfway mark, but wouldn't have been unduly concerned if it had been a little lower, as they do differ and not uncommon with VW's to need a 1L top up.

Hi all, I'm no I'm going to get stick for this, I have accidentally put to much oil in the car. I thought the car would naturally burn it of, But on the motorway I have the car a good boot fall and it filled the motorway with blue smoke. A part from that the car is running fine. No warning lights nothing.

GrayMK7R

You can drain out the oil with a screwdriver on the drain screw at the bottom of the sump. Go for it!

Aaron7r

Cheers for replys people. I will check the cars oil once cold in the morning. The car is running fine, And is not down on performance. So I can put car on ramp and drain out with drain screw with just screwdriver needed?

According to Manual oil should be dipped with engine at running temperature. Wait a few mins after stopping to allow to settle.

mickR

5/30 is standard, Halfords own brand is correct spec and reasonably priced.

Fashven92

I did an oil and filter change at 1000 miles, and am planning to do the same at 5000 mile intervals between the official services. If you get a vacuum oil extractor it's easy and clean to do, and even if it doesn't do any good, it certainly doesn't do any harm.

ColC1981

Just a quick point to note, a filter by definition filters the oil, as it filters it starts to clog/block up, this in itself is not a bad thing as it will then start to filter out finer particles, therefore keeping the oil/engine cleaner, if you keep changing your filter you are preventing this from happening.

mickR

Great, thanks for the quick replies! I'll get some 5w-30 bought. Has anyone had to top up at all? Heard a few stories about other VWs burning a fair bit of oil

Which is better 5W40 or 5W30?

As as the post above, 5W 40 is better - mainly because it can work more effectively at higher temperatures. VW recommend 5W30 for the 6R too which runs much cooler. 5W40 is still a recommended oil in the handbook IIRC

Is 5W3 oil better than 7R?

Because the 7R runs at 110 degrees + which is a high temperature for 5W3 oil to maintain the correct viscosity. 5W 40 performs better at theses temperatures, yet maintains the right level of cold start protection. The millers Nanodrive is a far superior oil to VW's Quantum also, and isn't available in the lower viscosity.

Is millers nanodrive better than quantum?

The millers Nanodrive is a far superior oil to VW's Quantum also, and isn't available in the lower viscosity. Although 5W30 is fine for most people, if you drive your car hard or the car is tuned, then the extra protection of 5W40 is much better. 2. SteveH and Ferg_7R reacted to this.

Kappa5605

Am i right in thinking the oil should be 5w 40 fully synthetic or is it only semi synthetic?

JonnyG

This is the VW approved Castrol stuff I think ... well I've been using it ;D

Kappa5605

Plus, now that i know what oil, should i change my filter aswell while im at it! should i just get the filter from VW or can i buy them somewhere cheaper?

stephen8512

im using MOTUL. They've specifically made an oil for our dubs called "MOTUL SPECIFIC 504/507". I've always used Motul in all my cars and not once have I had any problems.

I have put a deposit down on a R over the phone with VW in Crawley. Just wondering if the MK7 burns oil like my old S3 8P? I know a lot of S3 owners say the engines burn 1 litre every 1000 miles on average. Mine was about every 3000 and I was wonder if these engines are the same?

A few seem to burn quite a lot, some don't burn any, but most burn a little from what I have read on here.

To the new owners. What temp is your oil once engine as at operating temp? Mine settled at 103C. This is a bit hotter than my Scirocco (95C). Is it just because of tight engine?

simpleR

Mine was the same, seemed to settle at 103 and drifted between 101 and 107. Presume that's normal. Was a slight smell of burning, burning is the wrong word more a smell of something hot, at several times during the first 20 or 30 miles....

Can't say I took much notice ,well in such detail ,mine was straight up needle, 90 deg ,has been on all the MK 7 cars

RobRain

104, quick to drop a degree or two when load dropped. Glad I'm not the only oil temperature watcher - you can't really flex the right foot until both water and oil are up to temp so it's normally the screen I go to for the first few miles.

almac

103/104 here with town country and motorway driving. Two sneaky wee boost squirts too

knightdiverx

Not sure if it's related to temperature, but I repeatedly noticed that after I switched the engine after a run, it sounded like something kept on whirring from inside the car. Wasn't an engine fan I don't think, but sounded like something was busy for a while.
