When did Donald Ross visit East Lake?
Thirty-two members of the Donald Ross Society visited East Lake in November 2021 only to discover that the much of the work of the renowned Scottish architect had been expunged. The course’s greens showed little in the way of contours and a running approach was possible on only a handful of approach shots. Fairways featured bunkers, but in most cases there was no risk/reward challenge to taking on the bunker. As a result, East Lake falls into one of my shortcut methods of course assessment: If you see it on TV, it’s probably overrated.

Is East Lake a city course?
East Lake, like Los Angeles Country Club, is a city course hemmed in in its entirety by a perimeter fence. The course is built on gently rolling hills and with the exception of holes 4, 6, 8 and 17, the holes are routed east-west to play directly into the wind or down wind. After a gentle starter into the wind, the par three second hole plays down wind. Gently sloping hills and typical at East Lake as are shaved fall-off areas surrounding the green.

Cuscowilla and Reynolds Plantation are the two major courses along Interstate 20 between Atlanta and Augusta. Access will be difficult around The Masters. At Cuscowilla, if I remember correctly, you must stay at the resort to play, but it's well worth it.

The Bears Best is quite good if you are up that way. It is FAR from the airport, however. Wolf Creek is almost right next to the airport and is surprisingly good. A few goofy holes (blind tee shots) on the second nine but considering the convenience to the airport, it's a good option.
