So if the DSG takes 10ms to shift (probably closer to 8ms but close enough) the clutches slip for one revolution. You might not feel it, but the clutches slip all of the time. If there's insufficient clamping pressure, the clutches will wear out. One second of slip equals 100 spins of the clutches and commensurate wear.

Stop-and-Go? You may want the automatic

From my experience in the community, I have not heard tons of horror stories about reliability with the DSG, or the automatic in the regular Golf. Plus, if you are buying the car new, you’ll have a warranty to cover any maintenance headaches for the first 6 years or 72,000 miles.

My advice is this: Reliability is not a huge concern. However, the DSG has some headaches that come with ownership, like any other dual-clutch out there. If you can live with the downsides, then it’s an excellent choice.

Does DSG reduce timing?

Now lets talk about the DSG itself. It is torque limited. So the gearbox will cut torque. It will also drop boost and reduce timing when it gets ready to shift for a smoother shift. DSG software removes that so you get a lot more power, faster shifts, and loads more fun. I've seen half second gains on the quarter mile in a stock R32 by just adding DSG software, no engine software at all.

UM is the only one in the world holding big power on a DSG gearbox with stock clutches. You don't need DSG coolers or clutches to hold power. Does a mechanic unit have two transmissions?

Since the Mechatronic unit effectively has two transmissions to work with, it is able to pre-select the next gear that you need before engaging the clutch and performing the shift. It simultaneously disengages one gear as it engages the next, resulting in that perfect power delivery. Where the DSG shines is in its ability to deliver both smooth and lightning-fast shifts, no matter the situation. From loafing along in commuter traffic to hitting back roads or race tracks on the weekend, it can do it all.
