Make Your Mental Game The Goal and Let The Score Take Care of Itself

My best students use each round to develop their mental skills and let the score take care of itself. Golf is a variable game – we have to do our best to not let the external variability affect us internally. No matter what your score or what’s happening around you, you have to learn how to stay constant inside.

What is Mental Golf Training?

In fact, it’s one of the biggest allures of the game – we get to experience many different emotions and mental challenges during a round – it’s like a virtual reality, without any real-life consequences.

How to develop your mental skills as part of your mental golf training

Who has no chance of playing golf?

Tony Romo has no chance. Michael Jordan loves it but cannot play it at a high level. Ivan Lendl failed to qualify for the U.S. Open. John Smoltz gave it a shot. No professional athletes from the other top sports have made it in golf recently.

What does higher arousal do in golf?

Those levels vary depending on the shot we are playing. A bit higher arousal helps hit the longer shots. A bit lower arousal helps play short game shots and putts. Most players are unaware of their level of arousal on the golf course unless it is really high.

Why is my golf swing not fast enough?

Your neurological system is not fast enough for the golf swing. Focusing on your swing means you are not fully connected to striking the golf ball in the necessary way and to the target. It makes you more Left Brained and less athletic. As your level of Arousal changes, your swing changes.

How does level of arousal affect swing?

As your level of Arousal changes, your swing changes. If your level of Arousal on the golf course is different than it was on the range, then your swing will be different. It won’t feel right or work as well as it did on the range, no matter how many balls you hit repetitively on the range.

What is the biggest challenge in golf?

1 Golf has one of the biggest challenges of all sports: The ball is not moving and you have lots of time to think, prepare to swing and then swing. This time available to think makes playing the shot much harder than hitting a baseball, or throwing a pass, or shooting a basket from the three-point line.

What is the exact position of the club face through the ball?

The exact position of the club face through the ball is critical to where the ball goes. Fractions of an inch translate to big differences in direction and distance. The path of the club face through the ball also has large effects on the resulting direction and movement of the ball. Then there is putting and short game.

Is golf the toughest game?

You need to find your way, your game. Golf is the toughest game. The physical game is very difficult. The Golf Mental Game is more difficult because what we naturally want to do and have been coached to do is mostly wrong for good performance.

Focus and Staying in the Now

We live in the age of multitasking, and actually focusing fully on one thing is just not something that we do too often. It’s a skill that can be learned, though, and is extremely important for playing golf well.

Positive Self-Talk

Coming into the game with a confident attitude goes a long way, no matter your skill level. We all get frustrated and can find ourselves falling into negative thought cycles such as “I can’t make this shot,” “because I messed up the last shot my whole game is ruined,” etc.

Valuing Failure

If you want to get good at golf, you’re going to have to be okay with being really bad at golf first. When you learn any skill, you start by not being very good at it. That’s why you’re learning.

Why is mental routine important in golf?

The mental routine is the foundation of a strong mental game and overall golf mental skills .

How to be successful in golf?

Before competition, take time to check your attitude for anything that might be causing you to feel unsettled for any reason, such as playing partners, conditions, excessive desire to play well, etc. Then take steps to change your obstacles into challenges to maintain a peaceful focus. Take a few moments to vividly imagine how you feel when you play your very best ; confident, peaceful, focused, patient, etc., then challenge yourself to maintain these feelings throughout the competitive round regardless of the challenges you face.

How do golfers challenge themselves?

Instead, they challenge themselves to maximize the physical skills they bring to a competitive round by maximizing golf mental skills that encourage reactive, “feel” oriented play.

What does it mean to be a champion golfer?

When asked to reflect on their best rounds of golf, almost all players describe feeling a calm and peaceful focus that remained with them during their round, allowing them to play to their potential. Instead of waiting for this sense of well-being to come to them, champion golfers are actively involved in creating this inner peace.

Why is golf important?

The most important thing you can do is to play golf for the right reasons. If it takes you hours and sometimes days to recover from a bad round, there is a strong chance you are playing golf for the wrong reasons. Several reasons for playing golf, when given too much importance, can become deterrents to inner peace.

What are the emotions that can be common to a round of golf?

The easy thing for most of us is to give in to anger, frustration, disappointment, fear, dread, hopelessness or any of the many emotions that can be common to a round of golf. More challenging is the task of catching and changing the thoughts that can fuel those emotions. Better players get very good at (1) identifying the “not allowed” thoughts most likely to interfere with their play, such as looking ahead or behind in the round, and (2) being prepared with “allowed” thoughts that are calming, positive and reinforcing, and can be used to displace not allowed thoughts, such as enjoying the landscape or consciously relaxing between shots.

Why do people play golf?

Several reasons for playing golf, when given too much importance, can become deterrents to inner peace. If you are playing golf to escape personal problems, attain self worth, prove something to others, make money, or because you do not know what else to do with yourself, you are playing for the wrong reasons.

Check out this simple process

The premise here is that what we think, say to ourselves, and our body language becomes our emotions, and our emotions trigger a response in our bodies.

Separating you the person from you the player

As I touched on in my last article, “How to build confidence on the golf course”, one of the first places to start in building mental toughness and unshakable confidence is being able to separate “you the player”, from “you the person”. From now on, I’d like you to take this a step further and “act yourself” into the persona of a champion.

Your body language triggers an emotional response from within

Research has shown that when you’re feeling stressed and fearful, you have more of a hormone called Cortisol. When you’re feeling confident, you have less Cortisol and more testosterone.

Act your way into the right thinking

In the same way, actors use similar techniques. Research shows that movements in your facial muscles can elicit certain emotional responses, e.g. frowning can produce a feeling of displeasure, whereas smiling can make you feel happier. Try smiling right now just for the sake of it, and see if it lifts your mood, even just a little.

How to get better at golf?

Stay healthy. Fuel your body with food and drinks before each pre-round to obtain the best performance. Drink a lot of water since dehydration reduces your performance during a round of golf. Eat enough and avoid being too full as well as foods with starch and sugar which will increase your blood pressure.

How to improve golf?

Don't set the bar too high when playing golf. This game is about accepting the result and having the desire to improve. Too higher expectations can cause pressure to build-up from within and frustrations when you underperform. Don't focus on the score and instead pay attention to the process and appreciate little progress.

Why do you play different types of shots during the short game?

Play different types of shots as possible from different lies during the short-game warm-up. This allows you to get more creative as well as familiarize yourself with the golf course.

How to hit the ball in practice?

How you are hitting the ball in practice has no correlation to the way you are going to perform in the game. Appreciate each hit and set out to improve. Avoid being hard on yourself and trust your efforts and the process. Work on hitting different types of shots while changing golf clubs.

Why do you need to warm up before playing golf?

You need to spend a number of minutes doing some warm-up exercises before a round of golf. A good warm-up routine allows you to play more consistently in golf. Just like any other sports warming up is necessary for obtaining the best performance and avoiding injuries. Many golf players tend to forego warm-up exercises.

Why do golfers stop after the first tee?

There is a tendency for golfers to stop after getting to the first tee because you may feel you have done all the preparations for the round. Spend sufficient time warming up your mind and body as this will allow you to feel comfortable during the game.

How to get ready for golf?

Prepare your muscles for the game by stretching. Prepare your body for the golfing challenge. Stretching helps get your muscles ready for the game. This prevents injuries and gets you ready for the round. Minimize static stretching during your warm-up routine as it reduces your power output.

How does mental preparation help in golf?

Mental preparation for golf can look different from one player to the next, but the Tour champions benefit from emphasizing what they can control, using imagery, creating a competitive attitude, warming up their mental routine, and setting mental goals.

How to feel better playing golf?

Following are simple steps. Put yourself in a relaxed position for a few moments before going to the course, or simply stay in bed a few extra minutes before preparing for the day. Take a few moments to assess how you feel. Compare this feeling to what you have felt on days when you have played your very best golf.

How to get rid of anxiety and get back to a good mental routine?

Keep track of how often you catch and redirect your thoughts, from things you cannot control, to things you can control. Monitor how often you are able to recognize and use anxiety or any unsettled feeling as a cue to relax and get back to a good mental routine.

How to use anxiety in golf?

Identifying particular situations where you will most benefit from using anxiety as a cue also tells you situations where you can start your golf mental game preparation in advance with imagery practice. Select the situations where you anticipate feeling the most anxious. Let’s use for example a particularly difficult hole on which you have had little success off the tee. Your anxious feelings as you approach the tee will be your cue. This cue is a reminder to stop worrying about where the ball might go and use your mental energy to: take a deep breath, commit to a definite target and club, visualize your shot and swing with a great tempo.

How to help yourself before a round?

Once you get good at distinguishing between thoughts that are outside or inside your control, you will be able to help yourself both before and during your rounds by using anxiety or any unsettled feeling as a “cue”.

How to get better at golf?

Once you get to the course with your great attitude and begin warming up for the round, take a few minutes to warm up your mental routine as well. This will allow you to go to the first tee prepared to narrow your focus over the ball. Use these steps.

What to do if you have difficulty identifying what to put on your mental list?

If you are having difficulty identifying whether an item should be on your list of mental challenges, follow the simple rule of deciding whether you truly have control over that item. If you do not, it goes on the list so that you can redirect your mental energy toward more constructive subjects over which you do have some control.
