Invest in a Golf Loft Machine
The most important thing that you will need is a golf loft machine. It is a must-have investment if you want to customize your golf clubs, making sure that the lie angle is at par with your preference. It is essential for measuring and bending golf clubs.
Know the Lie Angle
Before you proceed, you must know the exact lie angle that you want for the golf club. There is no internationally recognized lie angle. The right choice will depend on several factors, such as the specific brand and model of the club that you have.
Use the Bending Bar
After taking the necessary measurement, you can now bend the loft using the bending bar. The latter is what will be doing the magic trick as it bends the loft to the desired angle. You will need enough strength to exert the necessary pressure. Otherwise, the lie angle will not bend as it should.
Measure the Lie Angle
After using the bending bar, you will need to once again measure the lie angle. See to it that it is exactly the angle that you want. Otherwise, you will need to repeat using the bending bar until you reach the right angle.

Give Mitchell a call, they sell used/refurbished units. They dont list them on their website as inventory is always changing. Prices are pretty good from what I've heard.
Feedback
Mitchell's used prices are almost the new price. Very little discount.

I will say that it's one of the best purchases I've made over the years so definitely worth the investment. I got lucky and found a local one on CL. But be warned, once your friends know you have one, you'll have plenty of guests who want to use it. Just make them bring the beer!

I bought a bending machine similar the the Economy Iron Bending Machine (attached). I paid about $100 less than the current advertised price

Considering you still need to come up with a way of checking your results after adjusting the clubs loft or lie with your vice and bending bar I'd say just pay the $5.00 a club fee and have a expert do it. I do like your intuition though. My kind of thinking.

You might want to consider one of these value line machines from the Golfworks, they mount in a vice and would probably work pretty well on forged irons. http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_VAM_A_cn_E_10059

Good luck. I think you may have a hard time adjusting the lies and lofts independently of each other without a way of properly securing the club. Slippage is also a possibility. Personally, I'd find another shop to do it. What kind of wedge was it that broke?

Your name is very apt as that is what I would rate your success bending by hand and making your own measuring devices (doomed). With a proper vice setup, you could bend them upright but not be accurate. Lofts... not a chance.

Geez, the guy wanted some advice on how to bend his clubs without "proper" equipment. He didn't ask if it was a good idea or if he'd get perfect results. He explained his reasoning and it is perfectly valid. Some people simply like doing things themselves even if it costs the same as having someone do it for them.

So, I've been interested in this as well and came across this thread. I was hoping to make a couple of my irons stronger to get some better gapping. Watched the Ping Tour Van video as recommended by another poster and decided to give it a try.

Hey go to youtube and look up the ping tour van. They bend clubs by putting it in a vise and they do the lie I think with a rubber mallet and the loft with a bending bar. Check it out.
