Do the Mk7 GTI Performance Pack and Golf R share brake pads?

Although the Mk7 GTI Performance Pack and the Golf R share identical front brake pads, front 340mm discs, and rear 310mm discs, they do not share the same rear brake pad. The friction surface is about the same, but the Golf R uses the electronic rear parking brake, and the pads have noticeably larger guide tabs with hooks.

How much brake fluid does a GTI take?

Brake fluid capacity is approximately 1.2 L (1.3 qt) and should be changed three years after delivery and every two years after that point. All factory GTI brakes use a single-piston caliper on slider pins, with two brake pads per disc.

Where is the brake pad wear sensor located on a GTI?

If delivered with the option, the pad wear sensor is typically installed on the left front inner brake pad. The base GTI braking system utilizes 312mm ventilated front discs and 272mm solid (non-vented) rear discs, with single-piston sliding calipers at all four corners.

How do I adjust the compensator on my parking brake?

Adjustment - Use a 10mm wrench and adjust the compensator until you feel a fair amount of resistance when trying to turn the rear wheels by hand. Release the parking brake handle and check to see that the wheels turn free, without any resistance from the parking brake. Now pull the handle all the way up.

How do you remove brake shoes?

Start by jacking up the vehicle and removing the wheel to access the brake drum behind it. You can then use a ratchet to remove the axle bearing nut and pull off the brake drum. Then, pull off the brake shoe springs, clips, and cable so you can pull off the old brake shoes.

What is a big brake kit?

A ‘big brake’ kit is another popular modification on the Mk7 GTI and usually means that the kit is put together with an aftermarket multi-piston caliper rather than simply being bigger than the factory. A multi-piston caliper can offer improved cooling and more even pad pressure over the factory GTI brakes, and of course, they look great behind a nice set of wheels. Some kits also offer easier brake pad changes, making the swap from street to track pads a much easier process. Some modern BBK kits have gone to monoblock calipers in search of the stiffest design, which makes swapping a pad more or less the same process as the factory brakes.

What brake pads are used on a Mk7 GTI?

There are very few pads that can be safely used on the street while also being capable of solid performance on track. The Ferodo DS2500 is probably the best dual-purpose brake pad available for the Mk7 GTI. They have good stopping power when cold, they are not excessively dusty or noisy, and can hold up to repeated heavy track use when paired with a proper racing brake fluid. We use these on our own project Mk7 GTI and have been blown away by the performance and the longevity of these pads.

What to look for in a Mk7 GTI?

Assuming the brakes are still offering strong stopping power and don’t have any obvious signs of performance loss, the first thing to look at are the pads themselves.

Why does my GTI brake squeak?

Squeaking or squealing brakes on your GTI results from the brake pad vibrating at an audible frequency. This could be due to uneven wear, improper break-in, or external dirt, dust, and debris creating issues.

Which is better, ceramic or ceramic brake pads?

For lower dust without compromising on performance, a ceramic brake pad might be the better choice. Ceramic pads tend to be very quality-dependent when it comes to achieving decent braking performance, as some low-quality variants may compromise stopping power to achieve lower dust.

Aye, they're pretty pants to tell you the truth. Having driven my mates golf with 16v brakes there's definitely a noticeable difference. And since I need a new calliper, pads and disks anyway might as well upgrade it while I'm at it in prep for the new engine.

I fitted 239 gti vented discs to a mates tuned 1.3. Noticeable improvement. But nothing like when I later fitted 16v hubs and 256mm brakes.

WAUOla Forum Member

John: True. But getting that vented disc spec isn't that much of a investment (if any noticeable on a 2000 mile/year MAX oldtimer).

WAUOla Forum Member

as its a 1.6 you already have VWII calipers so the GTI stuff is direct bolt on fit, as long as the kit you buy is a decnt make you'll be ok for a daily driver really. only when you're going on track you really want to pay the extra and if you wanted to go that route go for larger brakes.

Tbh, the general feedback about EBC on the forums isn't good at all. I'd be looking at pagid, Hawk, Mintex, Ferodo etc. I know I had EBC greens before and they were rubbish.

Open for any good (specific) suggestion to match a pair of Brembo Max'es just ordered.

Replacing your brake pads is a very easy job to perform on your Volkswagen GTI MkIV and a great way to get started on "Doing it yourself"

In general, you should inspect your brake pads and rotors about every 25,000 miles, and replace them if the material lining of the pad is worn down enough to trigger the pad replacement sensor or there is less than a quarter inch of material on the pad.

Figure 1 Before you begin working on the brakes, check your brake fluid reservoir. You will need to compress the caliper piston which will cause brake fluid to travel back up into the reservoir and you need to make sure there is room for it (red arrow).

Unlike most cars that use the inside of the rear disk for the parking brake system the GTI Mk4 parking brake system uses the rear brake calipers to hold the car

The system is simple and the only down side is possible rotor warp if you are performing hard repeated braking and then set the parking brake. Adjustment is much easier than on the system that uses a traditional brake shoe inside the drum of the rear rotor.

Project Photos

Figure 1 Adjustment - With the rear of the car safely supported in the air and the ash tray and cup holder removed you will see the brake handle adjustment mechanism. There is a long bolt that's comes from the rear of the parking brake handle that a compensator (red arrow) is attached too.
