Getting the loft and lie angle checked is going to run you anywhere from $2-$5 per club, depending on the amount of work needed. It's a relatively inexpensive tune-up that'll save you some massive headaches once the season kicks into gear, whenever that might be.

How do you correct a lie angle?

If it's pointing towards the toe, then your club is too upright. If it's pointing towards the heel, then it's too flat. If the line is perpendicular to the grooves on the face, then your lie angle is correct.

What lie angle should my golf clubs be?

Matching the lie angle of clubs to the specific golfer is one of the goals of a clubfitting session. Lie angles almost always range from the mid-50 degrees (in drivers) to the mid-60 degrees (in short irons). In irons, the range is typically from 59 or 60 degrees to around 64 degrees.

Does changing loft change lie angle?

As you change the loft and the face angle, you will also change the lie unless there is a separate setting to alter the lie independently of loft.

Can the lie of a golf club be changed?

It can be re-bent without any adverse effect on it. In addition, once a club is bent to a given specification, it will stay there until changed by an outside force of either bending again or striking a hard object. Loft and lie changes are more or less permanent.

Does upright lie promote a draw?

The upright lie also promotes a left tilting spin axis, which leads to what's generally described as draw spin. An upright lie angle basically gives you a head start, but depending on the severity of the slice conditions the golfer generates, it certainly won't guarantee a draw.

How lie angle affect ball flight?

Being fit for lie angle is important because it affects the direction and flight of the ball. For instance, if the sole of your club at impact is interacting with the grass more toward the toe then the lie angle is too flat. If impact is more toward the heel then the lie angle is too upright.

What is the difference between loft and lie angle?

Loft is the primary factor in how high or low a golf shot flies. The more loft a club has, the higher the resulting shot. Wedges have the highest loft in a set of irons. The "lie angle" of any clubhead is the angle between the center of the shaft and the sole.

Invest in a Golf Loft Machine

Use the Bending Bar

After taking the necessary measurement, you can now bend the loft using the bending bar. The latter is what will be doing the magic trick as it bends the loft to the desired angle. You will need enough strength to exert the necessary pressure. Otherwise, the lie angle will not bend as it should.

Measure the Lie Angle

After using the bending bar, you will need to once again measure the lie angle. See to it that it is exactly the angle that you want. Otherwise, you will need to repeat using the bending bar until you reach the right angle.

What is the lie angle on a 9 iron?

You might hear a golfer (or clubfitter) saying things such as, "You need flatter lie angles on your irons," or "I had my irons bent 1-degree upright.".

Conversely, if the toe of the putter is down and the heel is up in the air, the tendency is to push the ball slightly to the right (for a right handed golfer).

Some beginners tend to have incorrect posture, so they can follow the right swing even while having an incorrect lie angle. 3 It will lessen your mis-hits.

Why does my golf club slice?

There is a risk of slicing the ball when your angle is too flat. This means that the angle between the shaft and the ground is smaller. Once your club is too flat for your swing, the toe of your golf club will have a lower range than the heel when it should be leveled. Slicing happens because of such reasons.

How to increase swing weight?

Has anybody made a DIY vice for holding an iron club head so you can adjust the lie yourself?

Pigems

It's only $3/$5 to have a club bent, much cheaper then buying a machine

Nessism

I think you could replicate Ping's bending method fairly easily if you have a heavy duty bench vice and some homemade hosel clamps. You will have to fab up something to bend loft too, but lie can be done with a rubber mallet. Of course you need a spec gauge after bending.

I should have said right at the start that I have an inclinometer and magnetic spirit level for measuring lie - it's perfectly good and I don't need anything more elaborate, so I don't need a loft-lie machine for the measurement at all. Thanks Nessism - that's a really useful DIY club holder for lie adjustment.

Nessism

Not wooden blocks. They are metal, aluminum I presume. You should be able to get a block of aluminum and drill/ream it for the proper hosel size. Then saw the block right down the middle of the bored hole. Sandwich the hosel with your blocks and clamp it tight in a sturdy bench vice for adjustment.

Personally I prefer my Mitchell steelclub as I do not have the ingenuity as Nessism. Those are some pretty slick tools. Hats off bro!

High Plains Driver

I had a Mitchell Steelclub+ for years, and it was awesome. However, I rarely have the need to alter loft of lie now, other than the occasional wedge, so I use this:
