This is what I call Rory’s “Nascar” move: Keep turning left! With his hips cleared and shoulders open, Rory continues to rotate. Fact: Pros keep turning left to avoid hitting it left.
4. Release
This is one of my favorite positions to look at, especially in a power hitter’s swing. Notice how his legs are long and extended, yet his torso is still pointed toward the ground and still turning. It’s evidence of how hard he is pushing into the ground even after impact.
5. Extension
A classic, high-draw release, with the back of his glove hand turning down and the clubhead turning over with zero hold off. (I know Rory played a fade in winning the Wells Fargo Championship back in May, but I don’t understand why he would ever go away from this swing.)
6. Finish
One word: balance. Try holding your finish until the ball lands. If you can do that, you’ll be in full balance like Rory and in position to watch the ball fly farther than ever.
Swing Arc
The first critical element to generating speed is something you may already know: the bigger the arc you can have in your swing (really, the taller you are) the further the distance the clubhead will travel, and usually the faster the club will travel.
Timing and Technique
The second way to create the clubhead speed is timing and technique. The best way I can describe how Rory gets the distance he gets is to twist a rubber band up 4 or 5 times, and let it go.
What Can We Learn?
First, if you can, work on widening the arc of your swing. This is different than taking a longer backswing. Instead, don’t be afraid to get your arms extended a bit on the takeaway, and create a little more distance for the club head to travel from the top of the backswing to impact.
