What happens if you cut off your O2 sensors?
If an oxygen sensor fails, the engine computer won't be able to correctly set the air-fuel ratio, which could result in lower fuel economy, higher emissions and damage to other components, such as an overheated catalytic converter.

Oxygen (O2) Sensor DIY for VW 2.0 L Engines
Here is a way to take the cheap Bosch oxygen sensor #15718, made for Ford cars, and use it in your 2.0 Volkswagen engine. This is an old trick on the MKIII engine but has not been tried on MK4 Jetta, Golf, and GTI models. These sensors have been proven to work on BMW, VW, Saab, and a list of other cars: why not save money and use them on yours?
Tools for the Job
Most of these tools are pretty common in a toolbox. The only ones that I would recommend buying are 1) the 02 sensor socket, part #95045 at Harbor Freight for $7.99 (use the 20% coupon and free flashlight coupon in the paper to get your money's worth) and 2) a wire stripper; sorry, no tips as where to get that cheap.
Removing the Old Oxygen Sensor
The very first thing that needs to be done is spray all around that sensor with your WD-40, Liquid Wrench, or whatever.
Splicing the Wires and Installing the O2 Sensor
The Ford sensor #15718 only has about 15-16" of wire. You're going to need around 30", so don't get too eager and cut off your VW harness just yet, lthough you can cut off the plug of your new Ford sensor as close as you can towards the connection.
Re-Installation
Re-install in reverse of the way you took everything out, but make sure you cover the threads of your sensor with anti-seize, or have a fun time trying to remove it again.
No Problem Running Bosch 15718 in VW 2.0L
I have had no problem running this sensor at all in my MKIV. I did try the same mod using a Denso sensor for a Toyota as the post sensor, and it did not turn out as well, which from what I've read has to do with the ohms.

Just bought a 1997 Mk3 GTI 8v. Lovely car runs like a dream, but the other day it just cut out completely whilst driving along. It has done it a few times now. Dosn't seem to matter whether its sitting still or accelerating. Sometimes it will start straight away but last night I had to leave it on the side of the road.

Thanks for that. I had a mechanic have a brief look at it and he said it could be the coil too. So thats good. I've had the car 2 days, luckily bought it from a garage so got a bit of warranty. Shame I've got to wait till after christmas now! Nevermind. Thanks for your help, lets hope thats all this is.

Well that lasted all of 3 days! Not a problem since christmas then today it went back to its wicked ways! Going to the garage monday for them to check it out.

Just having a play around before it goes to the garage tomorrow. Found one of the leads from the spark plug to the distributor cap wasn't sitting on the pin properly on the distributor. It had been flattened! So got a pair of pliers and made it circular again so it fitted on the pin nicely.

the 1997 models have a seperate crank position sensor. Its at the front quite low. You can see it going around the back of the oil filter and just behind the front engine mount. You can pick one up for about 50 for a cheap one or 150 ish from VW. Im changing mine next week.

Well finally after having two faulty crank position sensors, my car is finally working brilliantly. I can finally get used to my new car as I've hardly driven it because of this problem! Really chuffed! Thanks for all your help guys. Hope this helps anyone else with the same problem.
