how to deloft the golf club at impact

Deloft is when you move the handle out from the clubhead. When you take a swing to compress the ball, you will want to deloft the club head upon impact, ensuring the club head is square to the ball. To deloft, the hands will have to be in front of the body by the time the iron hits the ball.

You can do it with one adjustment: Deloft the club at impact. As you start down from the top, shift your front knee over your front foot (see photo). This will get you hitting down on the ball with the shaft leaning toward the target—that's what delofts the clubface.Dec 16, 2013

You will ‘cover’ the ball with your body which will create lag with the club face, essentially, the body will lead the club to impact. What does a delofted Swing look like?

As the club approaches the ball (see below), they look very similar to each other with the delofted clubhead on the right coming in slightly higher. Why deloft a golf club at impact?

The main benefit of de-lofting your club at impact is that you create optimal launch conditions for the ball. That is a fancy way of saying that you send the ball off in the most efficient way in terms of the spin you impart on the ball and the take-off angle that it takes. Both of these factors combine to effect the distance of the resulting shot.

What is delofting a golf ball?

Everyone, with every club in the bag except the driver and the putter. De-lofting is also often known as compressing the ball and it really helps the ball act as it is designed to. By compressing the ball properly at impact, you actually help it get into the air by letting the grooves in your irons work their magic and launch the ball.

What does de-lofting mean?

If you’ve ever watched a slow-motion replay of any of the best golfers in the world, you’ll notice that they deliver the club at impact with their hands way ahead of the ball. This has the effect of taking loft off of the club. This shaft-lean, as it is often called, creates what is known as dynamic loft.

What are the disadvantages of de-lofting?

It is true, there can always be too much of a good thing and de-lofting can go too far. If you take too much loft off your club at impact you will struggle to get it off the ground, which makes sense. You may also start to hit shots really fat as you try to overdo the compression and hitting down on the ball.

This is key piece of research on your own game but it can lead to you seeing that some of your clubs go identical or very similar distances. This can be a problem and is something you should do something about.

If you don’t de-loft your club face then you will put the ball up in the air with a weak flight or even thin it , if you overly de-loft it then you will struggle to get the ball of the ground.

On another thread Iteach is doing his very best to convince others of an obvious truth. To maximize the distance you hit any particular iron you should hit it with a shallow angle of attack and a delofted club face created by forward shaft lean. Iteach is of course correct and I finds it amazing that he could find anyone to argue to the contrary.

WT Door

I agree with you in concept that a little is truly necessary but beyond that there are diminishing returns.

ksgolfcoach

Steve, Great question, before I answer the definite ill answer the hypothetical. If you get into a position where you are able to have a shallow aoa with a deloft of the dynamic loft then you have a very solid swing.

sblack5

never been one to try to deloft to try to hit it further.....but I think as Monte says above..... if I can come in shallower, and still get the hands forward and control my distance I feel that the hands forward position at impact stabilizes the face to the path thru impact and I'm gonna hit it SOLID, and not as a glancing type blow

juststeve

Putter: So you can understand the argument I wrote this in the next to the last paragraph of the OP: "To avoid confusion, I am not claiming that one should not hit the ball before they hit the ground, or that doesn’t require a bit of shaft lean.

juststeve

Putter: Yes, I realize that and Iteach did an excellent job of making that point, over and over, in the thread that inspired me to start this one. As I said in the OP. I find it hard to believe anyone was disagreeing with him, but there you go. Steve

Reasonability

The only answer I can come up with is in a word....ego. If the question on the table is "why the heck force a 6 iron to fly as far as 5 iron" and doing so through delofting the crap out of it... if that is at the heart of this, it comes down to some sort of macho man thing. (imagine that in golf -- lol).
