Having always owned manuals before the R I became well versed in the 'stick it into 2nd gear' when setting off for better traction. With the DSG you cannot start from 2nd gear so what do you seasoned vets do, I'm new to it so I assume you set off in 1st and try and change to 2nd asap, or does the 4wd make the whole 2nd gear thing redundant?

With DSG in snow, switch to manual mode to change up quickly. Never had any issues driving a DSG in snow (for last 7 years), EXCEPT, when I had Bridgestone tyres which were disastrous! But that was a FWD GTI, and always found it better to disable the traction control on that which would try to overcompensate for the slippery surface.

PS. There is no substitute for Winter Tyres as I found out for the last 3 years. They make a huge huge difference to braking distances on snow and ice, much more than I expected.
