When pushing on grips it's normal for the grip to compress in length somewhat. You need to compare the installed length against a new grip to make sure you pushed it on all the way and avoided this condition.

I've had this happen to me many times when I've changed out grips. What I found that worked for me was to make darn sure that the grip was ALL the way on. I would push with the palm of my hand against the grip when it was slid on and put a lot of pressure on the butt end while the shaft is in the vise.
