What is a VW MKIV door lock?

Unlike a basic mechanical door lock the VW MKIV uses an electro-mechanical device called a door-lock module or mechanism. It’s pretty standard tech on modern day cars, but it was relatively new during the MK4’s production. The door lock mechanism resides inside the door hidden behind the inner door panel and window regulator carrier.

Where are the micro switches on a MK4 door lock?

The above image shows three of the four micro-switches. The fourth is found within the mechanical portion of the door lock module. The part numbers for the MKIV micro-switches are as follows:

How many micro switches does a MKIV have?

The MKIV uses at least four micro-switches; two determine if the key being turned to lock or unlock the doors and open or close the windows. Another monitors the locking mechanism and whether the door is locked or unlocked. Finally, the fourth monitors the position of the door (open or close).

Is the MK4 door lock localized?

There are all sorts of odd issues with the MK4 door locks. It’s also not localized to one specific door, but rather may occur to any or multiple doors.

Is a door lock module too expensive?

The door lock modules really aren’t too expensive individually. However, the cost may add up if you’re needing to fix multiple doors, especially if you go to a repair shop. For the DIY crowd, you may simply follow the above linked instructions for removing and replacing the door lock module. The parts are as follows:

1. Ignition Coil Pack Failure

Ignition coil packs are a common problem in many vehicles, including the MK4 GTI’s 1.8T. An ignition coil pack transforms the voltage from the vehicle’s battery into the voltage needed by the spark plugs to produce a spark in the combustion chamber.

2. Oil Sludge Buildup

Unfortunately, oil sludge is common on the early 1.8T engines, or the MK4 GTI’s engine because of the low oil capacity in these engines. Oil sludge is, as it sounds, is thick oil deposits that collect in the engine and can cause blockages in the inlet/outlet or the oil pickup tube.

3. Coolant Temperature Sensor Failure

A coolant temperature sensor (CTS), often referred to as an engine coolant temperature sensor ETC, is common to go out on many engines. The 1.8T is no exception. A CTS gauges the temperature of coolant, or antifreeze, going through the engine. The sensor provides the temperature reading on your dash.

4. Water Pump Failure

Another pretty common problem with many engines is water pump failure. A water pump circulates coolant from the radiator to the engine ensuring that the engine is running at the optimal temperature. Without a functioning water pump, the engine will quickly overheat and will continue to overheat until it’s been replaced.

5. Timing Belt & Tensioner Failure

Arguably one of the most important problems is the timing belt or timing belt tensioner or roller failure. This is because the timing belt and associated rollers or tensioners are not the most reliable out of the factory. A timing belt links the cylinder head, camshafts, and crankcase to run in sync.

6. Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure

The crankshaft position sensor, often referred to as the RPM sensor or impulse sensor, is common enough on the MK4 GTI to be on this list. A crankshaft position sensor is an important sensor in an engine because it controls ignition and fuel injection. The sensor is located directly on the engine block.

7. Power Window Regulator Failure

Lastly, we know this is not an engine-related problem, however, since the MK4 GTI is going on two decades old, the power window regulators will more than likely need to be replaced. Power window regulators hold your vehicle’s window in a channel in the door panel. That channel, when the power window switch is pressed, moves the window up and down.
