1. Disc Down

As a beginner to disc golf, you are going to want to disc down. So, what do I mean by disc down? I mean you are going to want to take that shiny new driver you bought and keep it in your bag.

2. Stand Still

When I first started playing disc golf, I drove my discs standing still. During that first round I just naturally walked up to the tee pad and with my feet firmly planted on the concrete, I hurled the disc at the basket.

3. Keep it flat

Something you’ll want to focus on while driving is how you are releasing the disc. When I started playing disc golf, I remember my first drives being very inconsistent. This was mostly due to how I was releasing the disc.

4. Understable Plastic

While throwing slower discs can be beneficial for newer disc golfers, something else beginners should consider about their discs is the disc stability. Stability or the high-speed turn rating of the disc refers to the disc’s tendency to turn left or right after leaving the players had.

5. Ask for help

If you are reading this article you are already doing this tip. As a new player, you can speed up your driving ability development by asking for help. This can be from online sources, like this website, or in person.

6. Practice

This tip may seem like a no-brainer. By practicing your drive over and over you will see improvement. I would suggest taking your bag to an open field near you and throwing each disc one after the other.

How to master disc golf?

You can master proper disc golf technique by maintaining good grip on the disc, using good hip rotation, reaching back to fully extend your throwing arm, looking away from the line of sight, leading the throw with your elbow, using a big, strong final step, and making sure to follow through after your throw.

Why does disc golf technique matter?

Why does technique really matter? Well, for some players starting out or others who are slowly learning the ropes of the game, technique isn’t anything more than words uttered by really good disc golf players: “Focus on technique”, “use good technique”, and “you should learn how to use good disc good technique.” Technique matters because once you learn the fundamentals of the game, all of the other parts of your game will improve.

What is the most common throw in disc golf?

The backhand throw is one of the most common throws in all of disc golf. It's tough to perfect, but once you master it, you open yourself up to learn the game and become a great disc golfer. But...

Why is consistency important in disc golf?

This is because consistency is one of the keys to disc golf. Disc golf is tough and being consistent with every hole and every throw matters.

How to throw slow is smooth?

As you move through the motion, your body will be a lot smoother and your throws will most likely get the same, if not more distance, on your shot. The weird thing with this concept is that it’s totally true and it took me forever to understand it. Once you can start taking it a little slower, you will immediately start gaining 40 to 50 feet on your overall throwing distance.

How to drive discs?

Whenever we all drive, we try to get the most power, velocity, and distance out of our shots. We don’t do this with trying to throw the disc harder or running up on the teepad for momentum. We do this with proper technique, a slow methodical walk up, and gripping the disc correctly. You can complete this grip by placing your thumb on top of the disc and your other fingers on the inside ring of the disc. Some people use two fingers, some three fingers, and others use four fingers. Modify it to whatever is most comfortable for you.

How to reach back in a throw?

The reach back is extremely simple as it is just a “reach back” diagonally at about a 45° degree angle toward the ground and your back leg. The more hip rotation you get before your throw, the more reach back you can get. And the more reach back you can get, the more power, momentum, and velocity you will have on the throw. You want a fully extended arm to maximize everything listed above. Do that, then continue deeper into the throw.

What is a power pocket?

When we throw a golf disc, our arm, forearm, hand, and chest all together create a U shaped region. This area that looks like a U is referred to be the power pocket. Power pocket helps our disc to cross a longer distance than usual.

Getting the disc into the beginning of power pocket

Before throwing it, we need to pull the disc. It is essential to bring it towards the chest with the hand on the outside of the disc. It creates something called a power pocket. As a result, the disc crosses a longer distance. A straight pull comes from a reach back to the middle of the chest with a hand on the outside.

The unfurling of power pocket

Everything up until making the U shape should be smooth and precise. Do not rush. Wait and accelerate your disc at the last split second. Keep planting rotating planting and extending the disc forward. It ensures we are not opening too early. By opening I mean not just the shoulder, the actual extension of the arm. After that launch your disc.

Mistakes to avoid

Some people start high on the reach back and then pull it down into a power pocket. Contrary, some players start from a lower position and then pull it down. None of the ways is accurate. Try to keep it on the same plane on your reach back through the pull.

Tips

To create the proper angle, you can practice in front of the mirror. It will help you to see the mistakes you are making. Once you know how to create the power pocket, go to the field and start practicing. The best way to learn this is to apply this. Else, you would not be able to identify your progress.

Conclusion

Disc golf power pocket is a renowned term among the disc golfers. It helps you to sharp your throwing skill almost in a perfect direction. But a lot of players struggle to get it right. With guidance and with enough amount of practice, one can quickly learn it.
