So I just bought a new putter and changed out the skinny stock grip with a brand-new SuperStroke 2.0. Perfect size but it just doesn't feel tacky... almost a "waxy" sensation. I tried cleaning it, scrubbing with soap and water but no real change. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?

BenSeattle

I usually rub down the new ones with hand sanitizer (alcohol). That seems to clean it up and make it feel better. Right our of the package they are a little off.

SwingMan

Not a good summer/warm weather grip for me. I bought two recently and replaced both.

Even Further

All my putters have various SS grips, none feel slick or waxy what so ever. All perform great in my crazy humid and hot climate.

BenSeattle

That’s just the way they are. I tried 3 different ones before I realized I Didnt really like them. I’m kind of amazed they ever got so popular.

dicko999

I still have one on my Del Mar and the only reason it feels decent is because it is so worn down. I will be going back to the Lamkin cord grip once this one is 100% done.

Scotia

I have a Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2 putter and the grip has become a little shiny and slippery.

TLUBulldogGolf

You can try soap and water, but usually after they start to get shiny it means they need to be replaced. Not sure if any of the current GP grips are close but you can probably find that grip online somewhere.

There was a thread here a couple weeks ago about a guy who steam cleaned his grips. Just for fun I tried it on a putter with a garment steamer I had at the house. Sure enough, it worked better than any other cleaning or sanding. Seems like too much work to do a whole set of clubs, but maybe one here and there .

Nessism

Scotchbrite and dish soap is what I use. Renews slick rubber grips to about 75% of new condition. Rub down aggressively, rinse and dry.

Colby327

I'd just replace it. If its really that shiny and slippery, it will be an uphill battle to bring it back. Just spend the $5 on a new black pingman grip and your unsore, relaxed, scrubbing muscles will thank you.

Pepperturbo

When grips get shiny and smooth that usually means oils from hands have penetrated them, to the point they need to be replaced. Nothing I know of takes oil out. I have a few buddies that have grips like that. Weird part is, it doesn't bother them one bit.

Perhaps you could contact GP and ask them which grip they would suggest for your Newport Select 2.....You're welcome.
