Series vs. Parallel
Two simple statements govern the rules for series versus parallel battery bank wiring. In a series circuit, the current through each of the batteries is the same. Also, the voltage across the circuit is the sum of the voltages across each component. In a parallel circuit, the voltage across each of the components is the same.
36V Battery Bank
If connected properly in a series circuit as shown, you should be able to test across the battery bank main positive and main negative terminals with a voltmeter and get a reading equal to the sum of each battery. In this example, your reading should equal 36 volts (6×6 = 36).
48V Battery Bank
A 48 volt golf cart battery bank wired in a series circuit is also very common in this industry. However, there are several combinations of individual battery voltages which can provide 48 volts. These combinations include the following:
Wiring Batteries in a Series
In a Series Configuration the batteries are wired per the diagram below and the result would be a doubling of the voltage while the capacity remains the same. In our illustration we show two 6V batteries with 225AH wired together. The result would be a battery bank that produces 12V and 225AH.
Wiring Batteries in Parallel
In a Parallel Configuration the batteries are wired per the diagram below and the result would be a doubling of the capacity while the voltage remains the same. In our illustration we show two 6V batteries with 225AH wired together. The result would be a battery bank that produces 6V and 450AH.
How to test golf cart battery?
Overall voltage available, then voltage of each individual golf cart battery. While testing voltage I can also run a load test on each golf cart battery. Technically a 6 volt battery should register 6+ volts on the meter, and when placing a 200 Ah load on the battery it should maintain at least 5 volts for 10-15 seconds. This will determine the internal state of the battery in question. If it performs as mentioned the battery is good. I use this cheaper old school load tester for several reasons. One being I can adjust the load applied based on battery being tested. (Most small load testers will only apply about 50-60 amps to the battery at the flip of the switch. Secondly it has two separate meters, one for voltage and one for Amps applied. Lastly they are affordable – old school load testers have a relatively short life span when testing as many batteries as I do.
What type of battery does an EZGO cart use?
The EZGO Medalist and Txt carts are based on a 36 volt battery bank. Consisting of six 6 volt golf cart batteries. We will be installing a new set of our PowerPro Golf Cart batteries. One of the few batteries available today that are still manufactured in the good ole’ US of A. PowerPro batteries offer great value and performance at a reasonable price. (Comparable to the Trojan T-105) with 215Ah at 6 volts. Or even the 232 Ah US Battery – us2200xc 6 volt golf cart battery we are replacing in this case. US Battery makes incredibly strong batteries. But no matter how good your golf cart battery might be – unless taken care of and proper voltage is maintained with your golf cart battery charger the life expectancy of that battery system is severely limited.
Why do you need to look over a golf cart?
We will want to look over the golf cart first because with older carts you will want to check over the battery bank and all connections for corrosion and deterioration. To insure good performance you will always want to replace all cables that need it.
What is BatteryPete?
BatteryPete offers all the things you might need to do your own professional battery installation. Batteries, Cables, Connectors, and even the best Corrosion treatment and preventative.
Can you install batteries in an Ezgo golf cart?
Today I will be doing a basic golf cart battery installation on an older Ezgo Golf cart. This is really a straight forward job nothing difficult here – maybe just lifting the batteries themselves in and out of the cart during the installation process.
Can you replace golf cart batteries?
Once I determine the batteries are in need of replace ment I begin the relatively straight forward process. First I will make note of any obvious connection issues (battery cables or terminals with corrosion or defect), replacing anything that does not look fit for continued use or if I feel it will effect the performance of the cart. BatteryPete offers golf cart battery cable kits for all popular models. Bad connections or wire corrosion account for approx. 1/3 of the usual complaints from customers mentioning cart speed issues or available time in service between recharging.
Why do RV owners prefer 6 volt batteries?
So why do many RV owners prefer six volt batteries? Six volt batteries are always deep cycle batteries. There is no confusing a six volt battery for a hybrid or marine grade battery. Six volt flooded lead acid batteries also have only three cells to maintain compared the six cells found in a 12 volt battery.
How many volts are in a 6 volt battery?
They are true deep cycle batteries that can be combined together to power 12, 24 and 48 volt systems. That’s the short answer. Here’s the long answer.
How many 6 volt batteries are needed to make a 12 volt battery bank?
Two six volt batteries wired in series are needed to create a 12 volt battery bank. But what if you want to increase that capacity? Adding more six volt battery pairs is the solution.
How to increase amp hour capacity?
To increase your amp hour capacity even more, simply add more pairs of 6 volt batteries. For example, adding an additional six volt battery pair will add an additional 225 amp hours for a total of 700 amp hours at 12 volts.
How to make 12 volts?
You can then connect each 6 volt pair in parallel with another pair to create a larger 12 volt battery bank. This is called a series parallel configuration.
What is a deep cycle battery?
Deep cycle batteries are used mostly in off-grid power systems. Boats, RVs and off-grid homes draw their power from deep cycle batteries throughout the day and evening. The batteries are discharged to a deeper level before being recharged by solar panels, wind turbines or generators.
What happens when you connect batteries in series?
RESULT: The outcome of connecting batteries in series is the that voltage output is added together (12 volts total). The amp hours remain the same.
How to access battery compartment on golf cart?
Lift the seat of the golf cart in order to access the battery compartment. You may need to use a rope or bungee cord to secure the seat in the open position so that you can work freely within the compartment.
What is the best way to prevent corrosion on battery terminals?
Coating the battery posts and terminal connections with petroleum jelly will help combat corrosion.
What is the color of the battery terminal?
The positive terminal will be marked with a "+" sign and is usually denoted by red color-coding. Connect a cable from the negative terminal of the first battery, which will be marked with a "-" sign and black if color coded, to the positive terminal of the second battery in the sequence.
Can you replace a golf cart battery?
With a cart that has been used for a while, it may be necessary to replace the batteries. A new cart may not have batteries. Connecting a battery to your Club Car golf cart is a pretty easy task, as the wiring system for the batteries is fairly basic. Lift the seat of the golf cart in order to access the battery compartment.
Do you need batteries for a golf cart?
Golf carts have becoming increasingly popular for personal use in recent years. Many people now own their own golf carts for recreation. Electric golf carts require minimal maintenance. Batteries are the power source for the cart and these need regular charging.
