How does the heater work on a Volkswagen Golf?

At the simplest level possible, the heater works by passing hot coolant from the engine into a tiny radiator called the heater core. At this point, the blower motor blows air across the it and the newly heated air blows on to the driver and passengers. If the heater has stopped working in your Golf, this process has failed in one way or another.

What does the thermostat do on a Volkswagen Golf?

The job of your Golf’s thermostat is to regulate the temperature of the engine. It does this by allowing water to enter the engine when it is getting hot, and by keeping coolant from entering while the vehicle warms up. Sometimes when a thermostat goes bad, it stays stuck open.

Can a chip be added to a VW TDI?

Chip and software upgrades for the VW TDI or Audi TDI engine The first recommended modification would be a chip tune. This is a modification to the stock programs on the car's computer. Some older VW TDI required soldering a physical chip to the car's computer, the ECU/ECM.

How much horsepower does a TDI have?

However, with just 90 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque available at the crank, these cars feel anything but light on their feet. What to do? Luckily, a vibrant aftermarket exists for TDI’s.

How can I make my diesel car warm up faster?

Keep Your Engine in a Warm Area If possible, store your diesel engine in a warm area where it will not be exposed to elements, such as sleet and snow. Keeping the engine in an area where the temperature is even a few degrees warmer can make it quicker to warm up.

How long does a TDI take to warm up?

The big semi engines can take 20 - 30 minutes of driving until they get up to operating temp conditions. The diesel engine needs to be under load to generate adequate heat.

How do I keep my diesel from freezing?

One way to avoid diesel fuel from crystallizing (or gelling) is to use an anti-gel fuel supplement. Diesel fuel anti-gels are simply added to the fuel (just drop it in the fuel tank). Anti-gels drop the freezing point of diesel fuel so that it is less likely to freeze in cold temperatures.

What to put in diesel to keep from freezing?

"Blending kerosene into diesel fuel in cold weather is the only sure-fire way of avoiding fuel-related cold-weather problems," he swears. Blending kerosene into #2 diesel fuel lowers the cloud point of the fuel, or the temperature at which the paraffin wax begins to crystalize.

Why is the heat in my car not very warm?

You might ask, “Why is my car heater not getting hot enough?” Common causes are thermostat problems, heater core issues, jammed heater flaps, air bubbles, and low coolant levels. Some of these reasons are partly due to the age of your vehicle, while others are a result of poor vehicle maintenance.

Does revving the engine warm it up faster?

The short answer: Yes, you can rev your engine to make it warm up faster. One big caveat to that answer is that it is highly recommended you don't do that. With modern gasoline vehicles, most manufacturers recommend you start the car and immediately start driving.

Why is the heat in my car cold?

Low Coolant Level The coolant (usually a mixture of water and antifreeze) in your engine doesn't just work to keep the engine from overheating: It's also the source of heat supporting the heating system. If there isn't enough coolant in your system, the heater core will blow cold air into your car.

Do you need to warm up TDI?

Modern diesel vehicles have better cooling systems than those of old and are designed to warm-up the vehicle quickly. Letting the vehicle start and idle for a minute or two will not hurt it and will only help but much more than that is really unnecessary in my opinion. How long do you really need to warm-up your diesel engine up for?https://mr4x4.com.au › how-long-do-you-really-need-to-...https://mr4x4.com.au › how-long-do-you-really-need-to-...

Why is it important to warm up a diesel engine?

Fire the engine and give it some time for the combustion heat to warm the engine evenly. This practice is very important on extremely cold mornings. Hot and cold engine parts expand at different rates, so gaps can form, which could cause leaks or gasket failures.10 Ways You're Killing Your Diesel - MotorTrendhttps://www.motortrend.com › featureshttps://www.motortrend.com › features

Why is my golf engine not heating up?

Low Coolant. While not having enough coolant may make your engine run hotter, it can also cause your Golf to not be able to create enough heat. Is there isn’t enough line pressure, due to low coolant, then the heater core will not be able to get any coolant itself.

Why is my heater not working?

If the heat is blowing, but blowing cold, it has something to do with the coolant getting to the heater core, or the heater core itself.

How to tell if radiator is hot or cold?

The overflow reservoir will be connected to the radiator by a tube coming from the top (usually right by the radiator cap). It should have separate lines to indicate “cool hot” and “cool cold”. Some vehicles only have full hot. Never touch the radiator cap unless the vehicle is ICE COLD.

What is the job of a golf thermostat?

The job of your Golf’s thermostat is to regulate the temperature of the engine. It does this by allowing water to enter the engine when it is getting hot, and by keeping coolant from entering while the vehicle warms up.

How to tell if your golf is cold?

If your Golf has a built in temperature gauge, take a look at it and see if it is in the spot it is normally in after a bit of driving. If it looks like it is colder than normal, that’s a pretty good indication that there is something wrong with the thermostat.

Can a heater core go bad?

The heater core itself can go bad. Over time, they are known to clog and fail. If you have a heater core that clogged, it’s not going to be able to pass coolant through. Without the warm coolant going through it, there can be no heat. A bad heater core can also leak, so watch out for that.

Your radiator's core may be constricted with rust particles/debris. Clean and flush the radiator with a heavy duty cooling system cleaner. You'll need to remove the thermostat temporarily and follow the directions on the label.

Heater does not work at all

check radiator fluid is full the heater operates buy the radiator fluid flowing through the heater core. next your thermostat might be stuck in the open position thus your radiator fluid not heating up on cold days - no hot radiator fluid no heat. if fan is not coming on check fuse first if fuse is good check heater fan motor

My 2003 ford focus heats up every once in a while I turn the heater on full blast it goes down to normal. Does anyone have any idea what maybe the problem

Something is wrong with the cooling system. You are using the heater and the heater fan as a secondary radiator and fan. The problem could be a temperature sensor on the engine or a burned out heater fan motor on the radiator/fan assembly. It could also be a fuse in the fan circuit.

Vw golf 2001. coolant system not working

Your most probable cause for this is because your water valve needs replacement or repairing. Not all cars have a water valve that brings the heated coolant into the heater core unit.

low radiator coolant level OR bad thermostat and Lord I hope not,a leaky heater core.Check fluid level first the look at thermostat replacement only after the level check. Good luck and bless you in advance if you should catch a cold...from the cold!

Continuos inside heat

Make sure the heater control is not on defrost and the the vent is not open. When you put it in defrost there is a vent that opens allowing air to come from outside, from the engine compartment. You should have the control to reserlculate, vent closed.

Plug-and-Play, 30HP Gains

The quickest, easiest way to wake up the ALH 1.9L TDI diesel in ’99-’03 Jettas is to reprogram the ECU. Big names in the tuning game for these cars are Kerma TDI, Malone Tuning, Rocket Chip Performance and TD Tuning.

5-Star Tuning

Malone Tuning is highly respected in the tuning realm, with solid power gains accompanied by great drivability (low smoke, linear throttle, etc.) and what is said to be the best customer support in the business.

Milder Injector Upgrades

By far, the combination of adding larger nozzles with a corresponding ECU tweak is hands down the biggest bang-for-your-buck pair of mods in the ALH Jetta world. A good entry-level nozzle upgrade offered by Kerma TDI is the Bosio DLC 520, which offers a cleaner burn, a 15-20 hp gain, and can even increase fuel efficiency.

Going Even Bigger

For folks looking to push their TDI into 200whp territory, Kerma TDI offers a complete power package that includes its DLC Race 520 nozzles, VNT-17 Plus turbocharger, 3 bar MAP sensor (more on that below), ARP head studs and a Colt Cams Stage 2 camshaft with lifters.

Euro-spec Turbo

Found on the 150hp European version of the 1.9L engine, the Garrett VNT-17 has long been a popular turbo upgrade for state-side Jetta TDI’s.

The BorgWarner BV39

This little gem has been around for more than six years now. It’s the BV39B from BorgWarner (coined the S7 by Kerma TDI), can support up to 180whp and in excess of 330 lb-ft. The BV39B sports a billet compressor wheel with a 34.5mm inducer (vs. 33mm on the stock VNT-15) and spools approximately 300 rpm sooner than the aforementioned VNT-17.

11mm Injection Pump

While it can be cost-prohibitive for those on tighter performance budgets, the 11mm injection pumps used on automatic transmission cars makes for a great little factory upgrade for manual transmission Jetta owners. For reference, the factory Bosch pump on manual transmission Jettas is a 10mm version.
