Step by Step – How to Install Your New Golf Cart Battery Meter
First let’s determine where you intend to mount the golf cart battery meter?
What is a battery meter?
A battery meter (or battery gauge) is a device you add to your electric golf cart to read the state of charge level for your battery bank. They come in either analog or digital, square or round, surface or in-dash mount. Battery meters indicate the voltage level of your battery bank and inform you when it is time to recharge.
What do you need to add to a golf cart?
A battery meter is a great accessory to add to your golf cart and it only requires a minimum amount of skill to install it yourself. Once you have acquired your battery meter, you will need to locate the best place on your dash to mount it, either surface mounted or in-dash. If it is a square LED type, you can surface-mount or put it in-dash.
What is a golf cart?

Is an on off switch necessary?
Please note that an on-off switch is not entirely necessary and the draw on the batteries to have the meter on full time is minimal, a sure way to keep your batteries from draining unnecessarily would be to install a method to turn it off.
A look-over first
We will want to look over the golf cart first because with older carts you will want to check over the battery bank and all connections for corrosion and deterioration. To insure good performance you will always want to replace all cables that need it.
Get the right batteries
The EZGO Medalist and Txt carts are based on a 36 volt battery bank. Consisting of six 6 volt golf cart batteries. We will be installing a new set of our PowerPro Golf Cart batteries. One of the few batteries available today that are still manufactured in the good ole’ US of A.
Do a test
I always start with a quick golf cart battery test of the system in general. Overall voltage available, then voltage of each individual golf cart battery. While testing voltage I can also run a load test on each golf cart battery.
Check the connections
Once I determine the batteries are in need of replacement I begin the relatively straight forward process. First I will make note of any obvious connection issues (battery cables or terminals with corrosion or defect), replacing anything that does not look fit for continued use or if I feel it will effect the performance of the cart.
Retaining system
Then I remove retaining system, in this carts case it is just the basic plastic spacer/retainer hold down. Secured by two nuts usually 9/16′. Next I will advise you to take your cell phone and snap a few pictures of the battery bank. This will help you in the re-install phase placing the battery jumper cables in the correct location.
Pull out the old batteries
Next you can begin pulling out the old batteries. Once complete I will inspect the battery area and frame for obvious signs of leakage and corrosion buildup.
New batteries go in
Next I will begin to install the new batteries, and reconnect the battery cables to their respective locations. After doing so I will also apply a corrosion preventative to the terminal connections on each individual battery.
What does a digital meter do?
A digital meter uses LED to display the state of charge. A series of lights are shown on the display indicating the level of charge. More bars or lights indicate more charge while fewer bars or lights indicate a lower level of charge.
How does an analog meter work?
The analog meter uses voltage to move its needle to indicate the level of charge. In the background, you can see “E” written on the far left that indicates empty while an “F” on the far right shows that the battery is full. A digital meter uses LED to display the state of charge.
