keeping a rangefinder perfectly still is overrated. i have one and i'm shaky, but you really only have to point and shoot and keep the reticle occasionally hovering on the flag. it doesn't have to be dead still on the flag.

If it isn't getting you distance over 100 yards, I'd contact the person you bought it from. That's not right. Even if you aren't 100% steady, you should still be getting SOME reading.

Just recently got the Leupold GX-4. Upgraded from a GX-1 and it is way better. In addition to the slope feature (which one can disable for tournament play by changing the faceplate), It is small and compact yet has some good heft to it due to the aluminum construction.
