An easy way to establish this is to use a piece of string over the top of your putter. Set up a straight line, as shown above, then hit a few putts and observe what your putter head does during the stroke. By using the string, you can see if your putter head comes inside, stays fairly straight or starts on the outside.

What is face rotation and arc in putting?

Face rotation against the target line is a consequence of moving the putter back and forth on a tilted swing plane. The pivot of the swing plane is located approximately at the upper part of the spine above the neck. Consequently, there will be more rotation for an upright stance as the swing plane will be more tilted.

Is a blade or mallet putter better?

While most golfers traditionally start off with a blade putter in their bag, mallet putters have gained popularity with advancements in control and stability through the stroke. Players with an arc stroke tend to perform better with blades because of the weight distribution between the heel and toe.

What is the difference between a blade and mallet putter?

A mallet putter is much larger than a blade putter. The original mallet putters were semi-circle in shape, and they came out the back of the putter head just a little further than the blade putters. The mallet putters can have the shaft of the golf club attached at the heel, or they can be center shafted as well.

Offset For Aim

A lingering tendency to miss right or left might be due to aiming errors. That is influenced by how much offset a putter has. A putter with an offset hosel, like the model above, naturally favors a left-aim bias (so can help players during their putting stroke who tend to aim too far right).

Toe Hang For Arc

Golfers who swing the putter to the outside on the backstroke may prefer a toe-hang putter, designed to promote a more in-to-in arc motion.

Face-Balanced For Control

A slight arc is natural. If yours is more than four degrees, you’re risking an open putterface during your putting stroke. The straighter-line stroke induced by a face-balanced mallet is the quick fix.

Center-Shaft For Center Hits

You won’t always catch the center of the sweet spot, but if you’re consistently catching the toe or heel, opt for a center-shafted mallet, which twists less than other putters on off-center strikes during your putting stroke.

What happens if your putter starts back too far on the outside?

Is a putt a mini golf swing?

That the putt is not a mini-golf swing, I suppose yes. The rest I have to disagree. You do have to manipulate the club to keep it truly straight back and through. Even with the rock of your shoulders, you're doing it over an inclined (or angled) point - your spine. So long as your spine is not perpendicular to the ground, I would think it impossible for a natural rocking of the shoulders not to produce a slight arc.

What is the AS theory of putter?

AS theory states that the angle of the club shaft by design innately causes the putter head to move in a slight arc just as your full swing does. StS theory states that the face should remain square to the target line naturally, with no physical manipulation of the hands.

How many degrees does a putter open?

Most will open the putter face less than 6 degrees on the back stroke and close less than 6 degrees on the follow through. The very best putters have less than 1 degree of rotation in both directions. To reemphasize, this is independent of the nature of their arc.

How does a putter head work?

As the stroke works into the backswing, the putter head tends to rotate open (as in the full swing), and at impact it returns to square. After impact, it moves back to the inside and begins to close. The key to this motion is to keep the putter face 90 degrees (perpendicular) to the path of the arc itself.

Why do putters have 2 degrees of loft?

How to do a putting stroke?

Here are my keys to making a more “on-plane” putting stroke: 1 Practice with a training aid such as the Perfectstroke, other arc trainers, or using a bench — anything with a straight edge that the shaft can follow to train yourself to keep your stroke more “on-plane.” 2 Focus on how to make this stroke and what you feel in order to do so. 3 Try to curb excessive face rotation by experimenting with putters that have less toe hang, face-balanced putters and/or by using larger grips. 4 If doing this does not seem to help, practice putting with your left hand only and you will learn to curb your overactive face rotation.

Is it normal to have a straight back stroke on a putter?

Note: The more upright your putter, the easier it is to make a straight-back, straight-through stroke. As the putter moves, you will also see a touch of face rotation; this is normal as long as it’s not forced. We want the stroke to be as natural as possible. Putters with different toe hangs allow for different amounts of rotation.

How to tell if a putter is heel or heel?

You can tell what a putter is by finding the balance point on the shaft and if the toe points down then it's toe weighted, if the toe points up it is heel weighted and if the face remains level it's middle weighted. After getting fit properly, my putting has improved immensely.
