You need to have two Xbox profiles signed in and linked to a controller for a split-screen game to recognize two players. You can also add a guest from the Sign in tab when pressing the Xbox button and then scrolling to the far left when the guide pulls up.

"Golf It" is a similar game to this one, although some people say it's a little worse and a little less casual, but it does have a co-op mode where two players take turns in putting the ball.
